| 16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. | 16Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah. |
| 17In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David totaled fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon totaled fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah there were fourteen generations. |
| 18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. |
| 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly. | 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her secretly. |
| 20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20After he had thought about it, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," he said, "don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
| 21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins." |
| 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: | 22Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said, |
| 23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”). | 23"See, a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means, "God with us." |
| 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife. | 24When Joseph got up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary as his wife. |
| 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus. | 25He did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son; and he named him Jesus. |
