Matthew 20
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1For the kingdom of the heavens is like to a man, a master of a house, who went out in the morning to hire workmen unto his vineyard. 2And having agreed with the workmen for a denarius the day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3And having gone out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace idle; 4And he said to them, Go also you into the vineyard, and whatever might be right (just) I will give you. 5And they went. And again having gone out about the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise. 6And about the eleventh, having gone out, he found others standing, and says to them, Why do you stand here all day idle? 7They say to him, Because no one has hired us. He says to them, Go also you into the vineyard, {and what ever is right you shall receive. Not is vulgate, ESV, NASB}

8And evening having arrived, the lord of the vineyard says to his foreman (steward, administrator, one entrusted), Call the workman and pay them the wages, having begun from the last up to the first. 9And those [hired] about the eleventh hour having come, they received each a denarius. 10And the first having come, they supposed that they would receive more and they received also themselves each a denarius. 11And having received, they grumbled against the master of the house, 12Saying, These the last have worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us, those having carried the burden (weight) of the day and the scorching heat. 13And answering to one of them, he said, Friend (Hetaire- supposed friend), I do you no wrong (injustice). Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14Take what is yours and go. However I wish to give to this last like as also to you. 15Or is it not permitted for me what I wish to do with that which is mine? Or is your eye evil because I am good? 16Thus will the last be first and the first last; {for many are called ones, however few [are] chosen (elected) ones. In Vulgate but not ESV, NASB}

17And Jesus about to go up into Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside on their own on the way and said to them, 18Behold, we go up into Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed (handed over) to the chief priests and scribes and they will condemn Him unto death, 19And they will betray Him to the ethnicities, to mock and to flog and to crucify; and he will rise again the third day.

20Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons came to Him kneeling down and asking something from Him. 21And He said to her, What do you wish? She says to Him, Say that these two sons of mine might sit, one from out of your right and one from out of your left in Your kingdom. 22And answering, Jesus said, You do not know what you ask for. Are you able to drink the cup which I am about to drink? {and the baptism which I am baptized to be baptized with? Not in vulgate, Darby, ESV, NASB} They say to Him, We are able. 23He says to them, You will drink indeed My cup; {and the baptism which I am baptized, you shall be baptized with- not in the same}; however to sit from out of My right and from out of the left, this is not Mine to give; but to those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.

24And having heard this, the ten were indignant concerning the two brothers. 25And Jesus having called them to Him, said, You know the rulers of the ethnicities exercise lordship over them and the great ones exercise authority over them. 26It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you, he will be your servant (diakonos, minister, latin-minister); 27And whoever wishes to be first among you, he will be your bond-servant (slave); 28Just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life (soul) as a ransom on behalf of many.

29And as they were going out away from Jericho, a great crowd followed Him. 30And behold, two blind men sitting beside the way having heard that Jesus is passing by, cried out, saying, Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David. 31And the crowd censured them, so that they should be silent. And all the more they cried out, saying, Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David. 32And having stopped, Jesus called them and said, What do you wish that I should do to you? 33They say to Him, Lord, that our eyes might be opened. 34And having been moved with compassion (sympathy, visceral affections), Jesus touched their eyes; and directly they received sight, and they followed Him.
