Numbers 1
The First Census of Israel
Roll Call in the Wilderness: The Lord's Census in Numbers Chapter 1

The opening chapter of Numbers sets the tone for the importance of obedience to God's commands and the necessity of organization in the community. It emphasizes how God values everyone in the community, counting each person individually. Even in the wilderness, the people are organized and structured, each with their individual roles and tasks, demonstrating how order and unity under God's leadership can result in a well-structured community ready to face any challenges ahead.

The Command to Count (Verses 1-4)

The chapter begins with the Lord commanding Moses and Aaron to count the number of Israelite men aged 20 years and above who are capable of going to war. The leaders of the twelve tribes are named, each one to assist with the count.

Census of the Tribes (Verses 5-43)

Each tribe’s count is systematically conducted, starting from Reuben and ending with Naphtali. The census details each tribe’s population, highlighting the vast size of the Israelite people.

Exception of the Levites (Verses 44-54)

The Levites are exempted from this census as they are assigned to care for the Tabernacle of the Covenant. The Israelites obey God's command and set up their camps around the Tabernacle, each tribe in its assigned place.

Numbers 1 opens with the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai, two years after their exodus from Egypt. In this chapter, God instructs Moses to take a census of all the men over 20 years old who are capable of going to war, laying the foundation for Israel’s organizational structure and military preparedness.
