The Two Silver Trumpets 1And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Make for yourself two silver trumpets. Of hammered work you shall make them, and you shall make use of them for calling the congregation, and for pulling up the camps. 3And they shall blow both of them, and all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 4But if they blow with one, the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. 5And you⁺ shall blow a short blast, and the camps that lie on the east side shall set out. 6And you⁺ shall blow a second short blast, and the camps that lie on the south side shall set out. A short blast they shall blow to set out. 7And in the assembling of the assembly, you⁺ shall blow, and not sound a short blast. 8And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you⁺ as an ordinance forever throughout your⁺ generations. 9And when you⁺ go into battle in your⁺ land against the adversary who oppresses you⁺, you⁺ shall sound a short blast with the trumpets, and you⁺ will be remembered before the face of YHWH your⁺ God, and you⁺ will be saved from your⁺ enemies. 10And in the day of your⁺ gladness, and in your⁺ appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your⁺ months, you⁺ shall blow the trumpets over your⁺ burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your⁺ peace offerings, and they shall be for you⁺ a memorial before the face of your⁺ God. I am YHWH your⁺ God.” From Sinai to Paran 11And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, that the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12And the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the Wilderness of Sinai. And the cloud settled down in the Wilderness of Paran. 13And they set out at the first according to the mouth of YHWH by the hand of Moses. 14And the standard of the camp of the sons of Judah set out at the first, according to their armies, and over their army was Nahshon son of Amminadab. 15And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Issachar was Nethanel son of Zuar. 16And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun was Eliab son of Helon. 17And the tabernacle was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the tabernacle. 18And the standard of the camp of Reuben set out, according to their armies, and over their army was Elizur son of Shedeur. 19And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Simeon was Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 20And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Gad was Eliasaph son of Deuel. 21And the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things; and the tabernacle was to be prepared for their arrival. 22And the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim set out, according to their armies, and over their army was Elishama son of Ammihud. 23And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh was Gamaliel son of Pedah-zur. 24And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin was Abidan son of Gideoni. 25And the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan set out, the rear guard of all the camps, according to their armies, and over their army was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Asher was Pagiel son of Ocran. 27And over the army of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali was Ahira son of Enan. 28These were the order of march of the sons of Israel according to their armies, and they began their journey. 29And Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite,† father-in-law of Moses, “We are setting out for the place of which YHWH said, ‘I will give it to you⁺.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for YHWH has promised good things to Israel.” 30And he said to him, “I will not go. But I will depart to my land and to my relatives.” 31And Moses said, “Please do not leave us, for upon thus you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. 32And it shall be, if you go with us, indeed it shall be that whatever good YHWH will do to us, the same we will do to you.” 33And they departed from the mountain of YHWH on a journey of three days, and the ark of the covenant of YHWH went before them for the journey three days to search out for them a resting place. 34And the cloud of YHWH was above them by day, when they set out from the camp. 35And it came to pass in the journeying of the ark that Moses said, “Rise up, O YHWH! And let Your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate You flee from your face.” 36And in its resting he said, “Return, O YHWH, to the myriads, the thousands of Israel.” Footnotes: 29 Reuel was also called Jethro; see Exodus 3:1.
