The Good and Bad Figs

1  הִרְאַנִי֮ (Has shown me) יְהוָה֒ (YHWH) וְהִנֵּ֗ה (and behold), שְׁנֵי֙ (two) דּוּדָאֵ֣י (baskets) תְאֵנִ֔ים (of figs) מוּעָדִ֕ים (set) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) הֵיכַ֣ל (the temple) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הַגְל֣וֹת (had removed) נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֡ל (of Babylon) אֶת־ (-) יְכָנְיָ֣הוּ (Jeconiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים (of Jehoiakim) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָה֩ (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) שָׂרֵ֨י (the princes) יְהוּדָ֜ה (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) הֶחָרָ֤שׁ (the craftsmen) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמַּסְגֵּר֙ (and metalsmiths), מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (from Jerusalem) וַיְבִאֵ֖ם (and had brought them) בָּבֶֽל׃ (to Babylon). 2  הַדּ֣וּד (Basket) אֶחָ֗ד (one) תְּאֵנִים֙ (figs), טֹב֣וֹת (good) מְאֹ֔ד (had very) כִּתְאֵנֵ֖י (like the figs) הַבַּכֻּר֑וֹת (first ripe); וְהַדּ֣וּד (basket) אֶחָ֗ד (and the other) תְּאֵנִים֙ (figs), רָע֣וֹת (bad) מְאֹ֔ד (had very) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹא־ (not) תֵֽאָכַ֖לְנָה (could be eaten), מֵרֹֽעַ׃ס (for badness).

3  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (Said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me) מָֽה־ (What) אַתָּ֤ה (do you), רֹאֶה֙ (see) יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ (Jeremiah)?

וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I said), תְּאֵנִ֑ים (Figs); הַתְּאֵנִ֤ים (figs), הַטֹּבוֹת֙ (the good) טֹב֣וֹת (are good); מְאֹ֔ד (very) וְהָֽרָעוֹת֙ (and the bad), רָע֣וֹת (bad), מְאֹ֔ד (are very) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) לֹא־ (not) תֵאָכַ֖לְנָה (could be eaten), מֵרֹֽעַ׃פ (for badness).

4  וַיְהִ֥י (Came) דְבַר־ (and again the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 5  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); כַּתְּאֵנִ֥ים (Figs), הַטֹּב֖וֹת (good) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (Like these) כֵּֽן־ (so) אַכִּ֞יר (I will regard) אֶת־ (-) גָּל֣וּת (the captive) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) שִׁלַּ֜חְתִּי (I sent forth) מִן־ (from) הַמָּק֥וֹם (place) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) אֶ֥רֶץ (into the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֖ים (of the Chaldeans) לְטוֹבָֽה׃ (for good). 6  וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י (And I will set) עֵינִ֤י (My eyes) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (upon them) לְטוֹבָ֔ה (for good), וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֖ים (and I will bring them back) עַל־ (to) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land); הַזֹּ֑את (this) וּבְנִיתִים֙ (and I will build them) וְלֹ֣א (and not) אֶהֱרֹ֔ס (tear down); וּנְטַעְתִּ֖ים (and I will plant them) וְלֹ֥א (and not) אֶתּֽוֹשׁ׃ (uproot). 7  וְנָתַתִּי֩ (And I will give) לָהֶ֨ם (to them) לֵ֜ב (a heart) לָדַ֣עַת (to know) אֹתִ֗י (Me) כִּ֚י (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); וְהָיוּ־ (and they will be) לִ֣י (My) לְעָ֔ם (people), וְאָ֣נֹכִ֔י (and I) אֶהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לָהֶ֖ם (their) לֵאלֹהִ֑ים (God), כִּֽי־ (for) יָשֻׁ֥בוּ (they will return) אֵלַ֖י (to Me) בְּכָל־ (with all) לִבָּֽם׃ס (their heart).

8  וְכַתְּאֵנִים֙ (Figs), הָֽרָע֔וֹת (and like the bad) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) לֹא־ (cannot) תֵאָכַ֖לְנָה (be eaten), מֵרֹ֑עַ (for badness); כִּי־ (surely) כֹ֣ה׀ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), כֵּ֣ן (So) אֶ֠תֵּן (will I give over) אֶת־ (-) צִדְקִיָּ֨הוּ (Zedekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יְהוּדָ֤ה (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) שָׂרָיו֙ (his princes), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem), הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ (remaining) בָּאָ֣רֶץ (land), הַזֹּ֔את (in this) וְהַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים (and those dwelling) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 9  וּנְתַתִּים֙ (And I will give them) לִזְוָעָה (for a horror) לְרָעָ֔ה (and an offense), לְכֹ֖ל (into all) מַמְלְכ֣וֹת (the kingdoms) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth) לְחֶרְפָּ֤ה (for a reproach) וּלְמָשָׁל֙ (and a byword), לִשְׁנִינָ֣ה (a taunt) וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה (and a curse), בְּכָל־ (in all) הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת (places) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (where) אַדִּיחֵ֥ם (I shall drive them) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 10  וְשִׁלַּ֣חְתִּי (And I will send) בָ֔ם (among them) אֶת־ (-) הַחֶ֖רֶב (the sword), אֶת־ (-) הָרָעָ֣ב (the famine), וְאֶת־ (and) הַדָּ֑בֶר (the pestilence), עַד־ (until) תֻּמָּם֙ (they are finished off) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הָאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥תִּי (I gave) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) וְלַאֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃פ (and to their fathers).
