The Creation
(John 1:1–5; Hebrews 11:1–3)

1  בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית (In the beginning) בָּרָ֣א (created) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (God) אֵ֥ת (-) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (the heavens) וְאֵ֥ת (and) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

2  וְהָאָ֗רֶץ (And the earth) הָיְתָ֥ה (was) תֹ֙הוּ֙ (formless) וָבֹ֔הוּ (and void), וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ (and darkness) עַל־ (was over) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) תְה֑וֹם (of the deep). וְר֣וּחַ (And the Spirit) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) מְרַחֶ֖פֶת (was hovering) עַל־ (over) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַמָּֽיִם׃ (of the waters).

The First Day

3  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), יְהִ֣י (Let there be) א֑וֹר (light); וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) אֽוֹר׃ (light). 4  וַיַּ֧רְא (And saw) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶת־ (-) הָא֖וֹר (the light), כִּי־ (that) ט֑וֹב (it was good); וַיַּבְדֵּ֣ל (and divided) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָא֖וֹר (the light) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ (the darkness). 5  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (God) לָאוֹר֙ (to the light) י֔וֹם (Day), וְלַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ (and to the darkness) קָ֣רָא (He called) לָ֑יְלָה (Night).

וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) אֶחָֽד׃פ (one).

The Second Day

6  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), יְהִ֥י (Let there be) רָקִ֖יעַ (a firmament) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הַמָּ֑יִם (of the waters); וִיהִ֣י (and let it be) מַבְדִּ֔יל (dividing) בֵּ֥ין (between) מַ֖יִם (waters) לָמָֽיִם׃ (and waters). 7  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And made) אֱלֹהִים֮ (God) אֶת־ (-) הָרָקִיעַ֒ (the firmament), וַיַּבְדֵּ֗ל (and He divided) בֵּ֤ין (between) הַמַּ֙יִם֙ (the waters) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that were) מִתַּ֣חַת (under) לָרָקִ֔יעַ (the firmament), וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) מֵעַ֣ל (above) לָרָקִ֑יעַ (the firmament); וַֽיְהִי־ (and it was) כֵֽן׃ (so). 8  וַיִּקְרָ֧א (And called) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) לָֽרָקִ֖יעַ (for the firmament) שָׁמָ֑יִם (Heavens).

וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) שֵׁנִֽי׃פ (the second).

The Third Day

9  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), יִקָּו֨וּ (Let be gathered together) הַמַּ֜יִם (the waters) מִתַּ֤חַת (under) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens) אֶל־ (into) מָק֣וֹם (place) אֶחָ֔ד (one), וְתֵרָאֶ֖ה (and let be seen) הַיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה (the dry land). וַֽיְהִי־ (And it was) כֵֽן׃ (so). 10  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (God) לַיַּבָּשָׁה֙ (to the dry land) אֶ֔רֶץ (Earth); וּלְמִקְוֵ֥ה (and to the gathering) הַמַּ֖יִם (of the waters) קָרָ֣א (He called) יַמִּ֑ים (Seas); וַיַּ֥רְא (and saw) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) כִּי־ (that) טֽוֹב׃ (it was good).

11  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), תַּֽדְשֵׁ֤א (Let sprout) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) דֶּ֔שֶׁא (vegetation), עֵ֚שֶׂב (the plant) מַזְרִ֣יעַ (bearing) זֶ֔רַע (seed) עֵ֣ץ (and tree), פְּרִ֞י (of fruit) עֹ֤שֶׂה (that is producing) פְּרִי֙ (fruit) לְמִינ֔וֹ (according to its kind), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whose) זַרְעוֹ־ (seed is) ב֖וֹ (in it) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth). וַֽיְהִי־ (And it was) כֵֽן׃ (so). 12  וַתּוֹצֵ֨א (And brought forth) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the earth) דֶּ֠שֶׁא (vegetation), עֵ֣שֶׂב (the plant) מַזְרִ֤יעַ (bearing) זֶ֙רַע֙ (seed) לְמִינֵ֔הוּ (according to its kind), וְעֵ֧ץ (and the tree) עֹֽשֶׂה־ (producing) פְּרִ֛י (fruit), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whose) זַרְעוֹ־ (seed is) ב֖וֹ (in it) לְמִינֵ֑הוּ (according to its kind). וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) כִּי־ (that) טֽוֹב׃ (it was good).

13  וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) שְׁלִישִֽׁי׃פ (the third).

The Fourth Day

14  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), יְהִ֤י (Let there be) מְאֹרֹת֙ (lights) בִּרְקִ֣יעַ (in the firmament) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), לְהַבְדִּ֕יל (to divide) בֵּ֥ין (between) הַיּ֖וֹם (the day) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (the night); וְהָי֤וּ (and let them be) לְאֹתֹת֙ (for signs) וּלְמ֣וֹעֲדִ֔ים (and for appointed times) וּלְיָמִ֖ים (and for days) וְשָׁנִֽים׃ (and years). 15  וְהָי֤וּ (And let them be) לִמְאוֹרֹת֙ (for lights) בִּרְקִ֣יעַ (in the firmament) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), לְהָאִ֖יר (to shine) עַל־ (upon) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth). וַֽיְהִי־ (And it was) כֵֽן׃ (so).

16  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And made) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵ֥י (two) הַמְּאֹרֹ֖ת (the lights) הַגְּדֹלִ֑ים (the great): אֶת־ (-) הַמָּא֤וֹר (light) הַגָּדֹל֙ (the greater) לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת (to rule) הַיּ֔וֹם (the day), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמָּא֤וֹר (light) הַקָּטֹן֙ (the lesser) לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת (to rule) הַלַּ֔יְלָה (the night); וְאֵ֖ת (and) הַכּוֹכָבִֽים׃ (the stars).

17  וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (And set) אֹתָ֛ם (them) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) בִּרְקִ֣יעַ (to be in the firmament) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens), לְהָאִ֖יר (to shine) עַל־ (upon) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth), 18  וְלִמְשֹׁל֙ (and to rule) בַּיּ֣וֹם (over the day) וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה (and over the night), וּֽלֲהַבְדִּ֔יל (and to divide) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָא֖וֹר (the light) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַחֹ֑שֶׁךְ (the darkness). וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) כִּי־ (that) טֽוֹב׃ (it was good).

19  וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) רְבִיעִֽי׃פ (the fourth).

The Fifth Day

20  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), יִשְׁרְצ֣וּ (Let swarm) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters) שֶׁ֖רֶץ (with a swarm) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (of souls) חַיָּ֑ה (living), וְעוֹף֙ (and bird) יְעוֹפֵ֣ף (let fly) עַל־ (above) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֖י (the face) רְקִ֥יעַ (of the firmament) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens). 21  וַיִּבְרָ֣א (And created) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) אֶת־ (-) הַתַּנִּינִ֖ם (sea creatures) הַגְּדֹלִ֑ים (the great), וְאֵ֣ת (and) כָּל־ (every) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (soul) הַֽחַיָּ֣ה׀ (living) הָֽרֹמֶ֡שֶׂת (that is crawling), אֲשֶׁר֩ (with which) שָׁרְצ֨וּ (swarmed) הַמַּ֜יִם (the waters) לְמִֽינֵהֶ֗ם (according to their kinds), וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (every) ע֤וֹף (bird) כָּנָף֙ (winged) לְמִינֵ֔הוּ (according to its kind). וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) כִּי־ (that) טֽוֹב׃ (it was good).

22  וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ (And blessed) אֹתָ֛ם (them) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), פְּר֣וּ (Be fruitful) וּרְב֗וּ (and multiply), וּמִלְא֤וּ (and fill) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֙יִם֙ (the waters) בַּיַּמִּ֔ים (in the seas), וְהָע֖וֹף (and the bird) יִ֥רֶב (let multiply) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the earth).

23  וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) חֲמִישִֽׁי׃פ (the fifth).

The Sixth Day

24  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), תּוֹצֵ֨א (Let bring forth) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the earth) נֶ֤פֶשׁ (soul) חַיָּה֙ (living) לְמִינָ֔הּ (according to its kind): בְּהֵמָ֥ה (Livestock), וָרֶ֛מֶשׂ (and the crawling thing), וְחַֽיְתוֹ־ (and beast) אֶ֖רֶץ (of the earth) לְמִינָ֑הּ (according to its kind); וַֽיְהִי־ (and it was) כֵֽן׃ (so). 25  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And made) אֱלֹהִים֩ (God) אֶת־ (-) חַיַּ֨ת (the beast) הָאָ֜רֶץ (of the earth) לְמִינָ֗הּ (according to its kind), וְאֶת־ (and) הַבְּהֵמָה֙ (the livestock) לְמִינָ֔הּ (according to its kind), וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (every) רֶ֥מֶשׂ (crawling thing on) הָֽאֲדָמָ֖ה (the earth) לְמִינֵ֑הוּ (according to its kind); וַיַּ֥רְא (and saw) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) כִּי־ (that) טֽוֹב׃ (it was good).

26  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), נַֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה (Let Us make) אָדָ֛ם (man) בְּצַלְמֵ֖נוּ (in Our image), כִּדְמוּתֵ֑נוּ (according to Our likeness); וְיִרְדּוּ֩ (and let them rule) בִדְגַ֨ת (over the fish) הַיָּ֜ם (of the sea), וּבְע֣וֹף (and over the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם (of the heavens), וּבַבְּהֵמָה֙ (and over the livestock), וּבְכָל־ (and over all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), וּבְכָל־ (and over every) הָרֶ֖מֶשׂ (crawling thing) הָֽרֹמֵ֥שׂ (that crawls) עַל־ (upon) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

27  וַיִּבְרָ֨א (And created) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (God) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאָדָם֙ (the man) בְּצַלְמ֔וֹ (in His image);

בְּצֶ֥לֶם (in the image) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) בָּרָ֣א (He created) אֹת֑וֹ (him);

זָכָ֥ר (male) וּנְקֵבָ֖ה (and female) בָּרָ֥א (He created) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

28  וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ (And blessed) אֹתָם֮ (them) אֱלֹהִים֒ (God), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) לָהֶ֜ם (to them) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), פְּר֥וּ (Be fruitful) וּרְב֛וּ (and multiply), וּמִלְא֥וּ (and fill) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth), וְכִבְשֻׁ֑הָ (and subdue it) וּרְד֞וּ (and rule) בִּדְגַ֤ת (over the fish) הַיָּם֙ (of the sea), וּבְע֣וֹף (and over the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), וּבְכָל־ (and over every) חַיָּ֖ה (living thing) הָֽרֹמֶ֥שֶׂת (that is crawling) עַל־ (upon) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

29  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), הִנֵּה֩ (Behold), נָתַ֨תִּי (I have given) לָכֶ֜ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֣שֶׂב׀ (plant) זֹרֵ֣עַ (bearing) זֶ֗רַע (seed), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which is) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) כָל־ (of all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הָעֵ֛ץ (tree), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בּ֥וֹ (has in it) פְרִי־ (the fruit) עֵ֖ץ (of a tree) זֹרֵ֣עַ (bearing) זָ֑רַע (seed); לָכֶ֥ם (to you⁺) יִֽהְיֶ֖ה (it shall be) לְאָכְלָֽה׃ (for food). 30  וּֽלְכָל־ (And to every) חַיַּ֣ת (beast) הָ֠אָרֶץ (of the earth), וּלְכָל־ (and to every) ע֨וֹף (bird) הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם (of the heavens), וּלְכֹ֣ל׀ (and to everything) רוֹמֵ֣שׂ (crawling) עַל־ (upon) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the earth), אֲשֶׁר־ (which has) בּוֹ֙ (in it) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (a soul) חַיָּ֔ה (living) אֶת־ (-), כָּל־ (every) יֶ֥רֶק (green) עֵ֖שֶׂב (plant) לְאָכְלָ֑ה (for food). וַֽיְהִי־ (And it was) כֵֽן׃ (so).

31  וַיַּ֤רְא (And saw) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (everything) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (He had made), וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), ט֖וֹב (it was good) מְאֹ֑ד (very)!

וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) עֶ֥רֶב (evening) וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) בֹ֖קֶר (morning), י֥וֹם (day) הַשִּׁשִּֽׁי׃פ (the sixth).
