Fairness and Mercy
1 כִּֽי־ (If) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there is) רִיב֙ (a dispute) בֵּ֣ין (between) אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (men), וְנִגְּשׁ֥וּ (and they come) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט (the court), וּשְׁפָט֑וּם (and they are to be judged). וְהִצְדִּ֙יקוּ֙ (And shall be declared righteous) אֶת־ (-) הַצַּדִּ֔יק (the righteous), וְהִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ (and condemned) אֶת־ (-) הָרָשָֽׁע׃ (the wicked).
2 וְהָיָ֛ה (And it shall come to pass), אִם־ (if) בִּ֥ן (a son) הַכּ֖וֹת (deserves to be beaten)— הָרָשָׁ֑ע (the wicked man)— וְהִפִּיל֤וֹ (that will cause him to lie down) הַשֹּׁפֵט֙ (the judge), וְהִכָּ֣הוּ (and to be struck) לְפָנָ֔יו (in his presence) כְּדֵ֥י (according to) רִשְׁעָת֖וֹ (his wrongdoing), בְּמִסְפָּֽר׃ (by number).
3 אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (Forty times) יַכֶּ֖נּוּ (he shall strike him)— לֹ֣א (no) יֹסִ֑יף (more), פֶּן־ (lest) יֹסִ֨יף (he should exceed this) לְהַכֹּת֤וֹ (and beat him) עַל־ (above) אֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) מַכָּ֣ה (blows) רַבָּ֔ה (with many), וְנִקְלָ֥ה (and be humiliated) אָחִ֖יךָ (your brother) לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ס (in your eyes).
4 לֹא־ (Not) תַחְסֹ֥ם (you shall muzzle) שׁ֖וֹר (an ox) בְּדִישֽׁוֹ׃ס (in its threshing).
Widowhood and Marriage
5 כִּֽי־ (If) יֵשְׁב֨וּ (dwell) אַחִ֜ים (brothers) יַחְדָּ֗ו (together), וּמֵ֨ת (and dies) אַחַ֤ד (one) מֵהֶם֙ (of them) וּבֵ֣ן (and a son) אֵֽין־ (is not) ל֔וֹ (to him), לֹֽא־ (not) תִהְיֶ֧ה (shall become) אֵֽשֶׁת־ (the widow) הַמֵּ֛ת (of the dead man) הַח֖וּצָה (outside), לְאִ֣ישׁ (to a man) זָ֑ר (a stranger). יְבָמָהּ֙ (Her husband’s brother) יָבֹ֣א (shall go in) עָלֶ֔יהָ (to her) וּלְקָחָ֥הּ (and take her) ל֛וֹ (his) לְאִשָּׁ֖ה (as wife), וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃ (and perform the duty of her husband's brother).
6 וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall come to pass that) הַבְּכוֹר֙ (the firstborn son) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תֵּלֵ֔ד (she bears) יָק֕וּם (will rise up) עַל־ (upon) שֵׁ֥ם (the name) אָחִ֖יו (brother) הַמֵּ֑ת (of the dead), וְלֹֽא־ (that not) יִמָּחֶ֥ה (may be blotted out) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (from Israel).
7 וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֤א (not) יַחְפֹּץ֙ (does want) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man) לָקַ֖חַת (to take) אֶת־ (-) יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ (his brother’s widow), וְעָלְתָה֩ (and let go up) יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ (his brother’s widow) הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה (to the gate) אֶל־ (to) הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים (the elders) וְאָֽמְרָה֙ (and say), מֵאֵ֨ין (Refuses) יְבָמִ֜י (My husband’s brother) לְהָקִ֨ים (to raise up) לְאָחִ֥יו (for his brother) שֵׁם֙ (a name) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel); לֹ֥א (not) אָבָ֖ה (he will) יַבְּמִֽי׃ (perform the duty of my brother-in-law).
8 וְקָֽרְאוּ־ (And shall call) ל֥וֹ (him) זִקְנֵי־ (the elders) עִיר֖וֹ (of his city) וְדִבְּר֣וּ (and speak) אֵלָ֑יו (to him). וְעָמַ֣ד (And if he stands firm) וְאָמַ֔ר (and says), לֹ֥א (Not) חָפַ֖צְתִּי (I do want) לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃ (to take her),
9 וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה (and shall come) יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ (his brother’s widow) אֵלָיו֮ (to him) לְעֵינֵ֣י (before the eyes) הַזְּקֵנִים֒ (of the elders), וְחָלְצָ֤ה (and remove) נַעֲלוֹ֙ (his sandal) מֵעַ֣ל (from) רַגְל֔וֹ (his foot), וְיָרְקָ֖ה (and spit) בְּפָנָ֑יו (in his face), וְעָֽנְתָה֙ (and answer) וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה (and say), כָּ֚כָה (So) יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה (shall it be done) לָאִ֔ישׁ (to the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) לֹא־ (not) יִבְנֶ֖ה (will build up) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (house) אָחִֽיו (of his brother).
10 וְנִקְרָ֥א (And shall be called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel), בֵּ֖ית (The house) חֲל֥וּץ (of him who had removed) הַנָּֽעַל׃ס (the sandal).
11 כִּֽי־ (If) יִנָּצ֨וּ (fight) אֲנָשִׁ֤ים (men) יַחְדָּו֙ (with each other) אִ֣ישׁ (a man), וְאָחִ֔יו (and his brother) וְקָֽרְבָה֙ (and draws near) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) הָֽאֶחָ֔ד (of one) לְהַצִּ֥יל (to deliver) אֶת־ (-) אִישָׁ֖הּ (her husband) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) מַכֵּ֑הוּ (of the one attacking him), וְשָׁלְחָ֣ה (and she puts out) יָדָ֔הּ (her hand) וְהֶחֱזִ֖יקָה (and seizes him) בִּמְבֻשָֽׁיו׃ (by the genitals),
12 וְקַצֹּתָ֖ה (then you shall cut off) אֶת־ (-) כַּפָּ֑הּ (her hand). לֹ֥א (Not) תָח֖וֹס (shall pity her) עֵינֶֽךָ׃ס (your eye).

13 לֹֽא־ (Not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall have) לְךָ֛ (you) בְּכִֽיסְךָ֖ (in your bag) אֶ֣בֶן (a stone) וָאָ֑בֶן (and a stone), גְּדוֹלָ֖ה (a large) וּקְטַנָּֽה׃ס (and a small).
14 לֹא־ (Not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall have) לְךָ֛ (You) בְּבֵיתְךָ֖ (in your house) אֵיפָ֣ה (an ephah) וְאֵיפָ֑ה (and an ephah), גְּדוֹלָ֖ה (a large) וּקְטַנָּֽה׃ (and a small).
15 אֶ֣בֶן (A stone) שְׁלֵמָ֤ה (complete) וָצֶ֙דֶק֙ (and just) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall have) לָּ֔ךְ (you) אֵיפָ֧ה (an ephah) שְׁלֵמָ֛ה (complete) וָצֶ֖דֶק (and just) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) לָּ֑ךְ (to you), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) יַאֲרִ֣יכוּ (may be prolonged) יָמֶ֔יךָ (your days) עַ֚ל (in) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽךְ׃ (to you).
16 כִּ֧י (For) תוֹעֲבַ֛ת (an abomination) יְהוָ֥ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) כָּל־ (is anyone) עֹ֣שֵׂה (doing) אֵ֑לֶּה (these things)— כֹּ֖ל (anyone) עֹ֥שֵׂה (doing) עָֽוֶל׃פ (iniquity).
Revenge on the Amalekites
17 זָכ֕וֹר (Remember) אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשָׂ֥ה (did) לְךָ֖ (to you) עֲמָלֵ֑ק (Amalek) בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ (on the way), בְּצֵאתְכֶ֥ם (as you⁺ were coming out) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).
18 אֲשֶׁ֨ר (How) קָֽרְךָ֜ (he met you) בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ (on the way) וַיְזַנֵּ֤ב (and attacked) בְּךָ֙ (among you) כָּל־ (all) הַנֶּחֱשָׁלִ֣ים (the stragglers) אַֽחַרֶ֔יךָ (at your rear); וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you were) עָיֵ֣ף (tired) וְיָגֵ֑עַ (and weary), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָרֵ֖א (he did fear) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).
19 וְהָיָ֡ה (And it will come to pass), בְּהָנִ֣יחַ (when has given rest) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֣יךָ׀ (your God) לְ֠ךָ (to you) מִכָּל־ (from) אֹ֨יְבֶ֜יךָ (your enemies) מִסָּבִ֗יב (all around), בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יְהוָֽה־ (YHWH) אֱ֠לֹהֶיךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֨ן (is giving) לְךָ֤ (to you) נַחֲלָה֙ (as an inheritance) לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ (to possess), תִּמְחֶה֙ (that you shall blot out) אֶת־ (-) זֵ֣כֶר (the remembrance) עֲמָלֵ֔ק (of Amalek) מִתַּ֖חַת (from under) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens); לֹ֖א (not) תִּשְׁכָּֽח׃פ (you shall forget).
