Witnesses against Israel

1  שִׁמְע֞וּ (Hear) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the word) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבֶּ֧ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (against you⁺) בְּנֵ֣י (O sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), עַ֚ל (against) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֔ה (the family) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) הֶעֱלֵ֛יתִי (I brought up) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

2  רַ֚ק (Only) אֶתְכֶ֣ם (you⁺) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (have I known)

מִכֹּ֖ל (from all) מִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת (of the families) הָאֲדָמָ֑ה (of the earth);

עַל־ (upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) אֶפְקֹ֣ד (I will visit punishment) עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (on you⁺) אֵ֖ת (-)

כָּל־ (for all) עֲוֺנֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ iniquities).

3  הֲיֵלְכ֥וּ (Can walk) שְׁנַ֖יִם (two) יַחְדָּ֑ו (together),

בִּלְתִּ֖י (unless) אִם־ (-) נוֹעָֽדוּ׃ (they have agreed)?

4  הֲיִשְׁאַ֤ג (Does roar) אַרְיֵה֙ (a lion) בַּיַּ֔עַר (in the forest),

וְטֶ֖רֶף (and prey)? אֵ֣ין (There is not) ל֑וֹ (for him)

הֲיִתֵּ֨ן (does give forth) כְּפִ֤יר (a young lion) קוֹלוֹ֙ (his voice) מִמְּעֹ֣נָת֔וֹ (from his den),

בִּלְתִּ֖י (unless)? אִם־ (-) לָכָֽד׃ (he has captured).

5  הֲתִפֹּ֤ל (Does fall) צִפּוֹר֙ (a bird) עַל־ (into) פַּ֣ח (a trap) הָאָ֔רֶץ (on the earth),

וּמוֹקֵ֖שׁ (and a snare is) אֵ֣ין (not) לָ֑הּ (unto it)

הֲיַֽעֲלֶה־ (does spring up) פַּח֙ (a trap) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the ground),

וְלָכ֖וֹד (and prey)? לֹ֥א (Not) יִלְכּֽוֹד׃ (it has captured).

6  אִם־ (If) יִתָּקַ֤ע (is blown) שׁוֹפָר֙ (a shofar) בְּעִ֔יר (in the city),

וְעָ֖ם (the people) לֹ֣א (not) יֶחֱרָ֑דוּ (do tremble)?

אִם־ (If) תִּהְיֶ֤ה (comes) רָעָה֙ (calamity) בְּעִ֔יר (to a city),

וַיהוָ֖ה (and YHWH) לֹ֥א (not) עָשָֽׂה׃ (has sent it).

7  כִּ֣י (Surely) לֹ֧א (not), יַעֲשֶׂ֛ה (will do) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH) דָּבָ֑ר (a thing),

כִּ֚י (that) אִם־ (unless) גָּלָ֣ה (He reveals) סוֹד֔וֹ (His plan)

אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדָ֖יו (His servants) הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ (the prophets).

8  אַרְיֵ֥ה (A lion) שָׁאָ֖ג (has roared),

מִ֣י (who) לֹ֣א (not) יִירָ֑א (fear)?

אֲדֹנָ֤י (The Lord) יְהוִה֙ (YHWH) דִּבֶּ֔ר (has spoken),

מִ֖י (who) לֹ֥א (not) יִנָּבֵֽא׃ (will prophesy)?

9  הַשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ (Let it be heard) עַל־ (in) אַרְמְנ֣וֹת (the citadels) בְּאַשְׁדּ֔וֹד (of Ashdod),

וְעַֽל־ (and in) אַרְמְנ֖וֹת (the citadels) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt),

וְאִמְר֗וּ (and say), הֵאָֽסְפוּ֙ (Assemble yourselves) עַל־ (on) הָרֵ֣י (the mountains) שֹׁמְר֔וֹן (of Samaria),

וּרְא֞וּ (and see) מְהוּמֹ֤ת (tumults) רַבּוֹת֙ (great) בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ (in her midst)

וַעֲשׁוּקִ֖ים (and the oppressed) בְּקִרְבָּֽהּ׃ (among her).

10  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יָדְע֥וּ (do they know) עֲשׂוֹת־ (to do) נְכֹחָ֖ה (right),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

הָאֽוֹצְרִ֛ים (Those storing up) חָמָ֥ס (violence) וָשֹׁ֖ד (and plunder)

בְּאַרְמְנֽוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃פ (in their palaces).

11  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH);

צַ֖ר (An enemy) וּסְבִ֣יב (will surround) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land);

וְהוֹרִ֤ד (and he will bring down) מִמֵּךְ֙ (from you) עֻזֵּ֔ךְ (your strongholds)

וְנָבֹ֖זּוּ (and plunder) אַרְמְנוֹתָֽיִךְ׃ (your citadels).

12  כֹּה֮ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָה֒ (YHWH);

כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (As) יַצִּ֨יל (delivers) הָרֹעֶ֜ה (a shepherd) מִפִּ֧י (from the mouth) הָאֲרִ֛י (of a lion)

שְׁתֵּ֥י (two) כְרָעַ֖יִם (legs), א֣וֹ (or) בְדַל־ (a piece) אֹ֑זֶן (of an ear);

כֵּ֣ן (so) יִנָּצְל֞וּ (will be delivered) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ (those dwelling) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria)

בִּפְאַ֥ת (with the corner) מִטָּ֖ה (of a bed),

וּבִדְמֶ֥שֶׁק (or the cushion) עָֽרֶשׂ׃ (of a couch).

13  שִׁמְע֥וּ (Hear) וְהָעִ֖ידוּ (and testify) בְּבֵ֣ית (against the house) יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) הַצְּבָאֽוֹת׃ (of the Hosts),

14  כִּ֗י (that) בְּי֛וֹם (on the day) פָּקְדִ֥י (of my visiting punishment) פִשְׁעֵֽי־ (for the transgressions) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עָלָ֑יו (upon him)

וּפָֽקַדְתִּי֙ (then will I visit punishment) עַל־ (on) מִזְבְּח֣וֹת (the altars) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) אֵ֔ל (el);

וְנִגְדְּעוּ֙ (and will be cut off), קַרְנ֣וֹת (the horns) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (of the altar)

וְנָפְל֖וּ (and they will fall) לָאָֽרֶץ׃ (to the ground).

15  וְהִכֵּיתִ֥י (And I will destroy) בֵית־ (the house) הַחֹ֖רֶף (of winter)

עַל־ (with) בֵּ֣ית (the house); הַקָּ֑יִץ (of summer)

וְאָבְד֞וּ (and will perish), בָּתֵּ֣י (the houses) הַשֵּׁ֗ן (of ivory)

וְסָפ֛וּ (and will be swept away), בָּתִּ֥ים (the houses) רַבִּ֖ים (great)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).
