He distributed to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread and a portion of meat and a raisin cake. | 3He then handed out to each Israelite man and woman a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. |
He appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the LORD, even to celebrate and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel: | 4He appointed some of the Levites to serve before the ark of the LORD, to offer prayers, songs of thanks, and hymns to the LORD God of Israel. |
Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom and Jeiel, with musical instruments, harps, lyres; also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals, | 5Asaph was the leader and Zechariah second in command, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel. They were to play stringed instruments; Asaph was to sound the cymbals; |
and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. | 6and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of God's covenant. |
Then on that day David first assigned Asaph and his relatives to give thanks to the LORD. | 7That day David first gave to Asaph and his colleagues this song of thanks to the LORD: |
Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples. | 8Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations! |
Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders. | 9Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds! |
Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad. | 10Boast about his holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! |
Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually. | 11Seek the LORD and the strength he gives! Seek his presence continually! |
Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done, His marvels and the judgments from His mouth, | 12Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed, |
O seed of Israel His servant, Sons of Jacob, His chosen ones! | 13O children of Israel, God's servant, you descendants of Jacob, God's chosen ones! |
He is the LORD our God; His judgments are in all the earth. | 14He is the LORD our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth. |
Remember His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations, | 15Remember continually his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations-- |
The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac. | 16the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac! |
He also confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant, | 17He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise, |
Saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan, As the portion of your inheritance." | 18saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance." |
When they were only a few in number, Very few, and strangers in it, | 19When they were few in number, just a very few, and foreign residents within it, |
And they wandered about from nation to nation, And from one kingdom to another people, | 20they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another. |
He permitted no man to oppress them, And He reproved kings for their sakes, saying, | 21He let no one oppress them, he disciplined kings for their sake, |
"Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm." | 22saying, "Don't touch my anointed ones! Don't harm my prophets!" |
Sing to the LORD, all the earth; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. | 23Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Announce every day how he delivers! |
Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. | 24Tell the nations about his splendor, tell all the nations about his miraculous deeds! |
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; He also is to be feared above all gods. | 25For the LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise, he is more awesome than all gods. |
For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens. | 26For all the gods of the nations are worthless, but the LORD made the heavens. |
Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and joy are in His place. | 27Majestic splendor emanates from him, he is the source of strength and joy. |
Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. | 28Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the nations, ascribe to the LORD splendor and strength! |
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come before Him; Worship the LORD in holy array. | 29Ascribe to the LORD the splendor he deserves! Bring an offering and enter his presence! Worship the LORD in holy attire! |
Tremble before Him, all the earth; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved. | 30Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is established, it cannot be moved. |
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns." | 31Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be happy! Let the nations say, 'The LORD reigns!' |
Let the sea roar, and all it contains; Let the field exult, and all that is in it. | 32Let the sea and everything in it shout! Let the fields and everything in them celebrate! |
Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the LORD; For He is coming to judge the earth. | 33Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth! |
O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. | 34Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good and his loyal love endures. |
Then say, "Save us, O God of our salvation, And gather us and deliver us from the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name, And glory in Your praise." | 35Say this prayer: "Deliver us, O God who delivers us! Gather us! Rescue us from the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holy name, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds." |
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. Then all the people said, "Amen," and praised the LORD. | 36May the LORD God of Israel be praised, in the future and forevermore. Then all the people said, "We agree! Praise the LORD!" |
So he left Asaph and his relatives there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required; | 37David left Asaph and his colleagues there before the ark of the LORD's covenant to serve before the ark regularly and fulfill each day's requirements, |
and Obed-edom with his 68 relatives; Obed-edom, also the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah as gatekeepers. | 38including Obed-Edom and sixty-eight colleagues. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun and Hosah were gatekeepers. |
He left Zadok the priest and his relatives the priests before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place which was at Gibeon, | 39Zadok the priest and his fellow priests served before the LORD's tabernacle at the worship center in Gibeon, |

With them were Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because His lovingkindness is everlasting. | 41Joining them were Heman, Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the LORD. (For his loyal love endures!) |
And with them were Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those who should sound aloud, and with instruments for the songs of God, and the sons of Jeduthun for the gate. | 42Heman and Jeduthun were in charge of the music, including the trumpets, cymbals, and the other musical instruments used in praising God.
