The Divisions of the Priests
6The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar. 7The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, 8the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,…

20. The Kohathites
26. and the Merarites, divided by lot

The first lot fell to Jehoiarib
The phrase "the first lot" indicates the method of selection used for the priestly divisions, which was by casting lots. This practice, deeply rooted in Hebrew tradition, was seen as a way to discern God's will, as Proverbs 16:33 suggests, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD." The name "Jehoiarib" means "Yahweh contends" or "Yahweh pleads," reflecting a deep connection to God. Historically, Jehoiarib was the head of one of the twenty-four priestly divisions established by King David. This division was significant, as it was the first, symbolizing a place of honor and responsibility in the service of the temple. The use of lots underscores the belief in divine sovereignty and order in the organization of temple service.

the second to Jedaiah
The phrase "the second" indicates the sequential order of the priestly divisions. "Jedaiah" means "Yahweh has known" or "Yahweh knows," suggesting a personal and intimate relationship with God. This name reflects the assurance of being known and chosen by God for a specific purpose. Historically, Jedaiah's division was also part of the twenty-four groups of priests, each serving in the temple at appointed times. The mention of Jedaiah highlights the continuity and structure within the priestly system, ensuring that worship and sacrifices were conducted in an orderly manner. This organization reflects the importance of maintaining a sacred rhythm in the life of the community, emphasizing the value of each division's role in the larger framework of worship.

(7-10) The order of the twenty-four classes of priests, as decided by the drawings. We have no means of discovering to which of the lines individual clans belonged, whether to that of Eleazar or to that of Ithamar.

(7) Jehoiarib . . . Jedaiah.--See 1Chronicles 9:10. The Maccabean princes were of the house of Jehoiarib (1 Maccabees 2:1).

Came forth.--From the urn (Joshua 16:1; Joshua 19:1).

Verse 7. - Jehoiarib. Written thus only here and in 1 Chronicles 9:10; elsewhere always Joiarib. He then is the head of the first of the twenty-four courses of priests in David's time, and according to his plan. (For the evidence of the return of some of this family from the Exile, see Nehemiah 11:10, though the text of this clause is very suspicious; Nehemiah 12:6, 19; see also interesting article under this name, with tables, Smith, 'Bible Dictionary,' 1:946.) Jedaiah. (For the return of some of the descendants of this family, see Ezra 2:36; Nehemiah 7:39; comp. also Nehemiah 12:6, 7, 19, 21.)
