The Temptation of Jesus
(Mark 1:12–13; Luke 4:1–13)

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to he tempted by the Devil. 2And, having fasted forty days and forty nights, He afterwards hungered. 3And the Tempter, having come near, said to Him, "If Thou art God's Son, speak, that these stones may become loaves of bread." 4But He, answering, said, "It has been written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"

5Then the Devil takes Him into the holy city, and placed Him on the pinnacle of the temple,

6and says to Him, "If Thou art a Son of God, cast Thyself down; for it has been written, 'He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee; and on their hands they shall bear Thee up; lest at any time Thou shouldest dash Thy foot against a stone.'"

7Jesus said to him, "Again it has been written, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"

8Again the Devil takes Him into an exceedingly high mountain, and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9and he said to Him, "All these things will I give Thee, if, falling down, Thou wilt worship me." 10Then Jesus saith to him, "Depart, Satan; for it has been written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'" 11Then the Devil leaves Him; and, behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry
(Mark 1:14–15; Luke 4:14–15)

12And, hearing that John was delivered up, He withdrew into Galilee. 13And, having left Nazareth, having come, He dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulon and Naphtali; 14that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

15"Land of Zebulon and land of Naphtali, by way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

16The people that were sitting in darkness saw a great Light; and to those sitting in a region and shadow of death Light arose."

17From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, "Repent ye; for the Kingdom of Heaven has drawn near."

The First Disciples
(Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11; John 1:35–42)

18And, walking by the sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers.

19And He saith to them, "Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20And, immediately leaving their nets, they followed Him. 21And, having gone on thence, He saw other two brothers: James a son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them; 22and they, having immediately left the boat and their father, followed Him.

Jesus Heals the Multitudes
(Mark 3:7–12; Luke 6:17–19)

23And Jesus was going about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

24And the report of Him went forth into all Syria; and they brought to Him all having ailments, afflicted with manifold diseases and torments, demoniacs, and lunatics, and paralytics; and He healed them. 25And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judaea, and beyond Jordan.
