Redemptive Work of the Son

The redemptive work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is central to Christian theology and is foundational to the understanding of salvation. This work is primarily characterized by His incarnation, atoning death, resurrection, and ascension.

Incarnation

The incarnation marks the beginning of the Son's redemptive mission. According to John 1:14 , "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." This act of God taking on human form is essential for the redemption of humanity, as it allowed Jesus to fully identify with human nature while remaining sinless (Hebrews 4:15).

Atoning Death

The atoning death of Christ is the pivotal event in His redemptive work. Jesus' crucifixion is seen as the ultimate sacrifice for sin, fulfilling the Old Testament sacrificial system. Isaiah 53:5 prophesies, "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." The New Testament confirms this in 1 Peter 2:24 , "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness."

Resurrection

The resurrection of Jesus is a testament to His victory over sin and death. It is the cornerstone of Christian faith, as Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:17 , "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins." The resurrection assures believers of their future resurrection and eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:20-22).

Ascension

Following His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven, an event recorded in Acts 1:9-11 . The ascension signifies the completion of His earthly ministry and the beginning of His exalted role at the right hand of the Father. Ephesians 1:20-21 describes this exaltation: "He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named."

Exaltation of the Son

The exaltation of Jesus Christ is the divine affirmation of His redemptive work and His supreme authority over all creation. This exaltation is multifaceted, encompassing His heavenly reign, intercessory role, and future return.

Heavenly Reign

Christ's exaltation includes His sovereign rule over the universe. Philippians 2:9-11 declares, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Intercessory Role

In His exalted state, Jesus serves as the High Priest and intercessor for believers. Hebrews 7:25 states, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them." This ongoing intercession ensures the believer's access to the Father and the application of His redemptive work.

Future Return

The exaltation of Christ also includes the promise of His second coming. Acts 1:11 assures, "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven." His return will consummate His redemptive work, bringing final judgment and the establishment of His eternal kingdom (Revelation 19:11-16).

In summary, the Son's redemptive work and exaltation are integral to the Christian faith, providing the basis for salvation, hope, and the ultimate restoration of all things under His lordship.
