Introduction

Time is a fundamental aspect of human existence, yet it holds a unique and profound significance in the context of a relationship with God. The Bible presents time not merely as a chronological sequence but as a divine construct that God uses to fulfill His purposes. Understanding the significance of time with God involves recognizing His sovereignty over time, the appointed times for His plans, and the call for believers to use their time wisely in devotion and service to Him.

God's Sovereignty Over Time

The Bible begins with the assertion of God's sovereignty over time: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This foundational statement establishes God as the Creator of time itself. Throughout Scripture, God is depicted as existing outside the constraints of time, as seen in Psalm 90:4: "For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night." This verse highlights God's eternal nature and His dominion over time, emphasizing that He is not bound by the temporal limitations that govern human life.

Appointed Times and Seasons

God's control over time is further illustrated through the concept of appointed times and seasons. Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven." This passage underscores the idea that God has ordained specific times for various events and purposes. The Bible is replete with examples of God orchestrating events according to His divine timetable, such as the birth of Jesus Christ, which occurred "when the fullness of time had come" (Galatians 4:4).

The Old Testament feasts and festivals, such as Passover and the Day of Atonement, also reflect God's appointed times for His people to remember and celebrate His acts of salvation and provision. These sacred times were established by God to draw His people closer to Him and to remind them of His faithfulness throughout history.

The Call to Redeem the Time

Believers are called to recognize the value of time and to use it wisely in their walk with God. Ephesians 5:15-16 exhorts, "Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." This passage encourages Christians to live intentionally, making the most of every opportunity to serve God and advance His kingdom.

The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) further illustrates the importance of using time and resources faithfully. The servants who invested their talents wisely were commended, while the one who squandered his opportunity was rebuked. This parable serves as a reminder that time is a gift from God, and believers are accountable for how they use it.

Time in Prayer and Worship

Spending time with God in prayer and worship is a vital aspect of the Christian life. Jesus Himself modeled the importance of setting aside time for communion with the Father, as seen in Mark 1:35: "Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray." This example underscores the necessity of prioritizing time with God amidst the busyness of life.

The Psalms frequently emphasize the significance of seeking God and meditating on His Word. Psalm 63:1 declares, "O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You. My soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You, in a dry and weary land without water." This longing for God reflects the deep desire to spend time in His presence, finding refreshment and strength through communion with Him.

Eternal Perspective on Time

Finally, the Bible encourages believers to maintain an eternal perspective on time. James 4:14 reminds us, "You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." This verse calls Christians to live with an awareness of the brevity of life and the importance of focusing on eternal matters.

The promise of eternal life with God provides hope and motivation for believers to invest their time in what truly matters. Revelation 21:4 offers a glimpse of the future where time, as we know it, will be transformed: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away." This assurance of eternity with God encourages believers to live faithfully in the present, knowing that their time on earth is preparation for an everlasting future with Him.
