The Proud

Topical Encyclopedia
The term "proud" in the Bible often refers to individuals who exhibit an attitude of arrogance, self-exaltation, and a lack of humility before God and others. The Scriptures consistently portray pride as a sin that leads to downfall and separation from God. The proud are contrasted with the humble, who are favored by God.

Old Testament References

In the Old Testament, pride is frequently condemned. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." This verse highlights the inevitable downfall that follows prideful behavior. Similarly, Proverbs 8:13 states, "To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech." Here, pride is listed among the things that God detests.

The account of King Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel serves as a vivid illustration of the consequences of pride. Nebuchadnezzar's pride in his accomplishments led to his temporary downfall and madness until he acknowledged God's sovereignty (Daniel 4:28-37).

New Testament References

In the New Testament, pride is also addressed as a significant spiritual issue. James 4:6 declares, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage emphasizes that God actively resists those who are proud, while extending grace to those who are humble.

Jesus Himself taught against pride, emphasizing humility as a key virtue in the Kingdom of God. In the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14), Jesus contrasts the self-righteous pride of the Pharisee with the humble repentance of the tax collector, concluding, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

Theological Implications

Pride is often seen as the root of many other sins, as it involves placing oneself above God and others. It is considered a barrier to spiritual growth and a relationship with God. The proud person relies on their own strength and wisdom, rather than acknowledging their dependence on God.

The Bible calls believers to cultivate humility, recognizing their need for God's grace and guidance. Philippians 2:3-4 instructs, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to examine their hearts for pride and to seek humility through prayer, repentance, and a commitment to serving others. The proud are reminded of the importance of submitting to God's will and acknowledging His authority in all aspects of life. By doing so, they align themselves with God's purposes and open themselves to His blessings and guidance.
