The Philistine Giants

Topical Encyclopedia
The Philistine giants are a group of formidable warriors mentioned in the Old Testament, known for their extraordinary size and strength. They are primarily associated with the Philistines, a people who were often in conflict with the Israelites during the period of the Judges and the early monarchy in Israel. The most famous of these giants is Goliath, but the biblical narrative includes references to other giants as well.

Goliath of Gath

Goliath is the most renowned of the Philistine giants, described in 1 Samuel 17. He was a champion from Gath, one of the five principal cities of the Philistines. The Bible provides a detailed description of his size and armor: "He was six cubits and a span tall" (1 Samuel 17:4), which is approximately nine feet nine inches. Goliath's armor and weaponry were equally impressive, including a bronze helmet, a coat of scale armor weighing five thousand shekels of bronze, and a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.

Goliath's challenge to the Israelites led to the famous encounter with David, a young shepherd who would later become king. Armed only with a sling and five smooth stones, David declared his faith in the Lord, saying, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied" (1 Samuel 17:45). David's victory over Goliath is a testament to God's power and the faith of His chosen servant.

Other Giants from Gath

The Bible also mentions other giants from Gath, indicating that Goliath was not an isolated figure. In 2 Samuel 21:15-22 and 1 Chronicles 20:4-8, several other giants are named, including Ishbi-benob, Saph (also called Sippai), and a giant with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. These passages recount the exploits of David's warriors, who defeated these giants in various battles.

The Anakim and Rephaim

The Philistine giants are often associated with the Anakim and Rephaim, ancient peoples known for their great size. The Anakim were inhabitants of Canaan before the Israelite conquest, and their presence is noted in the report of the spies sent by Moses: "We even saw the descendants of Anak there" (Numbers 13:28). The Rephaim are mentioned in several passages, including Deuteronomy 2:11, where they are described as a people "as tall as the Anakim."

Cultural and Theological Significance

The presence of giants in the biblical narrative serves multiple purposes. Culturally, it reflects the ancient Near Eastern context, where tales of giants and mighty warriors were common. Theologically, the accounts of the Philistine giants underscore the power of God to deliver His people against seemingly insurmountable odds. The defeat of giants by the Israelites, particularly by David, highlights the theme of divine intervention and the triumph of faith over physical might.

The Philistine giants, therefore, are not merely historical figures but also symbols of the challenges faced by God's people and the victories achieved through reliance on Him. Their accounts continue to inspire believers to trust in God's strength and provision in the face of daunting adversaries.
