The natural world, as depicted in the Bible, is a testament to the creative power and majesty of God. It serves as both a backdrop and a participant in the unfolding narrative of Scripture, reflecting God's glory, wisdom, and providence.

Creation and Order

The Bible begins with the account of creation, where God brings the natural world into existence. Genesis 1:1-2 states, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." The subsequent verses describe the orderly process by which God creates light, sky, land, vegetation, celestial bodies, animals, and finally, humanity. This account underscores the intentionality and orderliness of God's creative work.

God's Sovereignty and Sustenance

Throughout Scripture, the natural world is portrayed as being under God's sovereign control. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein." This verse emphasizes God's ownership and authority over all creation. Furthermore, God sustains the natural world, as seen in Colossians 1:16-17 : "For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

Revelation of God's Character

The natural world reveals aspects of God's character. Romans 1:20 states, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." Nature serves as a general revelation, providing evidence of God's existence and attributes to all humanity.

Humanity's Relationship with Nature

Humans are given a unique role in relation to the natural world. Genesis 1:28 records God's command to humanity: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth." This mandate establishes humanity's responsibility to steward and care for creation, reflecting God's image through wise and benevolent dominion.

Nature's Response to Sin

The natural world is also affected by the fall of humanity. Genesis 3:17-18 describes the curse upon the ground due to Adam's sin: "Cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field." This indicates that the natural world shares in the consequences of human sin, experiencing decay and disorder.

Nature in Eschatology

The Bible speaks of a future restoration of the natural world. Isaiah 65:17 prophesies, "For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind." Revelation 21:1 echoes this promise: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more." These passages point to a time when creation will be renewed and freed from the effects of sin.

Praise and Worship

The natural world is often depicted as participating in the worship of God. Psalm 19:1 proclaims, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." Similarly, Psalm 148 calls upon all elements of creation—sun, moon, stars, mountains, trees, animals, and people—to praise the Lord. This imagery highlights the natural world's role in glorifying its Creator.

In summary, the natural world in the Bible is a profound expression of God's creative power, sovereignty, and redemptive plan. It serves as a witness to His character, a domain for human stewardship, and a participant in the cosmic narrative of redemption and restoration.
