The Instruction to the Disciples refers to the teachings and guidance that Jesus Christ imparted to His followers during His earthly ministry. These instructions are foundational to Christian doctrine and practice, emphasizing the principles of faith, discipleship, and the Kingdom of God. The Gospels provide numerous accounts of these teachings, which are essential for understanding the mission and message of Jesus.

1. The Call to Discipleship

Jesus' call to His disciples was both an invitation and a command. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus says, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." This call required immediate and total commitment, as seen in the response of Peter and Andrew, who "left their nets and followed Him" (Matthew 4:20). The call to discipleship involves a radical reorientation of life, prioritizing the Kingdom of God above all else.

2. The Sermon on the Mount

One of the most comprehensive sets of instructions given by Jesus is found in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Here, Jesus outlines the ethical and spiritual standards for His followers. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) describe the blessedness of those who embody the values of the Kingdom, such as humility, mercy, and purity of heart. Jesus also teaches about the fulfillment of the Law, urging His disciples to exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees (Matthew 5:20).

3. The Parables

Jesus frequently used parables to convey deep spiritual truths. These accounts, drawn from everyday life, were designed to reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom to those with ears to hear (Matthew 13:10-17). Parables such as the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23), the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37), and the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) illustrate key aspects of God's character, the nature of the Kingdom, and the expected response of the believer.

4. Instructions on Prayer

Jesus provided specific guidance on prayer, emphasizing its importance and the attitude with which it should be approached. In Matthew 6:9-13, He offers the Lord's Prayer as a model, highlighting the need for reverence, submission to God's will, and dependence on Him for daily needs. Jesus also taught persistence in prayer, as illustrated in the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8).

5. The Great Commission

Before His ascension, Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission, a pivotal instruction that defines the mission of the Church. In Matthew 28:19-20, He commands, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." This charge underscores the global scope of the Gospel and the responsibility of believers to spread the message of salvation.

6. The Cost of Discipleship

Jesus did not shy away from teaching about the cost of following Him. In Luke 9:23, He declares, "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me." This instruction highlights the sacrificial nature of true discipleship, requiring a willingness to endure hardship and persecution for the sake of Christ.

7. Love and Service

Central to Jesus' instruction is the command to love one another. In John 13:34-35, He states, "A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another." This love is to be expressed through humble service, as exemplified by Jesus washing the disciples' feet (John 13:1-17).

The Instruction to the Disciples encompasses a wide range of teachings that continue to guide and challenge believers today. These instructions form the bedrock of Christian life, calling for a commitment to live out the values of the Kingdom in every aspect of life.
