Ahithophel

Ahithophel was a highly esteemed counselor to King David, renowned for his wisdom and insight. His counsel was considered as if one had inquired of the word of God (2 Samuel 16:23). Ahithophel's reputation for giving sound advice made him a key figure in the political landscape of David's reign. However, his account takes a pivotal turn during the rebellion of Absalom, David's son.

When Absalom conspired against his father, Ahithophel defected to Absalom's side, offering his services to the usurper. His defection was a significant blow to David, as Ahithophel's counsel was highly valued. Ahithophel advised Absalom to pursue David immediately, suggesting a swift attack that would catch David off guard and lead to a decisive victory (2 Samuel 17:1-3). This plan was strategically sound and could have potentially ended David's reign.

Hushai

Hushai the Archite was another counselor, but unlike Ahithophel, he remained loyal to David. When David fled Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion, Hushai met him with torn clothes and dust on his head, a sign of mourning and loyalty (2 Samuel 15:32). David sent Hushai back to Jerusalem to act as a spy and to counteract the counsel of Ahithophel.

Hushai's role was crucial in thwarting Ahithophel's plans. When Absalom sought advice, Hushai presented an alternative strategy. He argued that David and his men were experienced warriors and would be prepared for an attack, suggesting instead that Absalom gather all Israel for a massive campaign against David (2 Samuel 17:7-13). Hushai's counsel appealed to Absalom's vanity and desire for glory, and it was ultimately chosen over Ahithophel's.

Divine Intervention

The narrative highlights the divine intervention in the affairs of men. Scripture notes that the Lord had ordained to frustrate the good counsel of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster upon Absalom (2 Samuel 17:14). Ahithophel's Demise

Realizing that his counsel had been rejected and foreseeing the failure of Absalom's rebellion, Ahithophel returned to his hometown, set his house in order, and took his own life (2 Samuel 17:23). Hushai's Success

Hushai's successful intervention allowed David time to regroup and prepare for the eventual battle against Absalom's forces. His loyalty and strategic acumen played a vital role in preserving David's kingdom. Through Hushai, God provided a means of deliverance for David, demonstrating His faithfulness to His covenant promises.
