The Broader Community

The concept of the broader community in the Bible encompasses the idea of living in harmony and cooperation with those outside one's immediate family or faith group. This theme is woven throughout Scripture, emphasizing the importance of love, service, and witness to those beyond the confines of the church or Israelite community.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were called to be a light to the nations. Although they were set apart as God's chosen people, their mission included being a blessing to all the families of the earth (Genesis 12:3). The Law given to Israel included provisions for the treatment of foreigners and sojourners, reflecting God's concern for justice and compassion beyond the Israelite community. Leviticus 19:34 states, "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God."

The prophets also spoke to the broader community, often addressing nations outside of Israel. For example, Jonah was sent to Nineveh, a city outside of Israel, to call them to repentance (Jonah 1:1-2). This demonstrates God's desire for all people to turn to Him, not just the Israelites.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the broader community takes on a more explicit form with the Great Commission. Jesus commands His disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19), indicating the expansion of God's covenant community to include all peoples. The early church, as recorded in the Book of Acts, exemplifies this outreach as the apostles and other believers spread the Gospel beyond Jewish boundaries to Samaritans, Gentiles, and the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

The Apostle Paul, in his letters, frequently addresses the relationship between believers and the broader community. In Romans 12:18, he writes, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." This instruction underscores the importance of harmonious relationships with those outside the faith. Furthermore, Paul encourages believers to "do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers" (Galatians 6:10), highlighting a dual focus on the church and the wider world.

Christian Responsibility

The broader community is not only a mission field but also a context for Christian living. Believers are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), influencing society with the values of the Kingdom of God. This involves engaging in acts of service, promoting justice, and demonstrating love to all people, regardless of their faith or background.

The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates the call to love one's neighbor, transcending ethnic and religious boundaries. Jesus uses this account to redefine the concept of "neighbor," showing that love and compassion should extend to all, including those who are different from us.

Conclusion

The broader community, as depicted in the Bible, is a sphere where believers are called to live out their faith in tangible ways. Through acts of love, service, and evangelism, Christians are to engage with the world around them, reflecting the character of Christ and advancing His Kingdom on earth.
