Reward from God

Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, the concept of reward from God is a recurring theme that underscores the relationship between divine justice and human conduct. The Scriptures present rewards as both temporal and eternal, contingent upon faithfulness, obedience, and righteousness.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for understanding divine rewards. In Genesis 15:1, God assures Abram, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." Here, God Himself is portrayed as the ultimate reward, emphasizing a relationship with the Divine as the highest blessing.

The Mosaic Law also articulates the principle of reward for obedience. Deuteronomy 28 outlines blessings for Israel contingent upon their adherence to God's commandments, promising prosperity, protection, and abundance. Conversely, disobedience results in curses, illustrating the conditional nature of these rewards.

The wisdom literature, particularly the Psalms and Proverbs, frequently addresses the theme of reward. Psalm 19:11 states, "By them indeed Your servant is warned; in keeping them is great reward." Proverbs 11:18 contrasts the deceptive wages of the wicked with the sure reward of righteousness: "The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows righteousness reaps a true reward."

New Testament Revelation

The New Testament expands on the concept of divine reward, often with an eternal perspective. Jesus' teachings frequently highlight the rewards awaiting the faithful. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declares, "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven" (Matthew 5:12). This promise of heavenly reward is linked to enduring persecution for righteousness' sake.

Jesus also emphasizes the importance of motives in seeking rewards. In Matthew 6:1-6, He warns against performing righteous acts for human recognition, advising instead to seek the Father's unseen reward: "Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

The Apostle Paul further elucidates the concept of reward in his epistles. In 1 Corinthians 3:8, he writes, "The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor." This passage underscores the principle of individual accountability and reward based on one's labor in God's service.

Paul also speaks of the "crown of righteousness" in 2 Timothy 4:8, a reward reserved for those who have longed for Christ's appearing. This crown symbolizes the eternal reward for faithfulness and perseverance in the Christian life.

Eschatological Rewards

The Book of Revelation provides a vivid portrayal of eschatological rewards. Revelation 22:12 records Jesus' promise: "Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done." This statement affirms the certainty of divine recompense at the end of the age.

The imagery of the "crown of life" in Revelation 2:10 further illustrates the reward for those who remain faithful unto death. This crown represents eternal life and victory over trials and tribulations.

Conclusion

The biblical narrative consistently presents rewards from God as both a present reality and a future hope. They serve as an encouragement for believers to live in accordance with God's will, with the assurance that their faithfulness will be recognized and rewarded by the Almighty.
