Responding to Mockery

Mockery, a form of ridicule or derision, is a challenge that believers have faced throughout biblical history. The Bible provides guidance on how to respond to such scorn, emphasizing patience, wisdom, and reliance on God.

Old Testament Insights

In the Old Testament, mockery is often directed at the righteous and those who follow God's commands. The account of Nehemiah is a prime example. When Nehemiah set out to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, he faced mockery from Sanballat and Tobiah. Nehemiah 4:1-3 describes how they ridiculed the Jews, questioning their ability to rebuild. Nehemiah's response was not to retaliate but to pray: "Hear us, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads" (Nehemiah 4:4). This demonstrates a reliance on God rather than personal vengeance.

The book of Proverbs also offers wisdom on dealing with mockery. Proverbs 9:7-8 advises, "He who corrects a mocker brings shame on himself; he who rebukes a wicked man taints himself. Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you." This suggests that engaging with mockers may be futile and that wisdom lies in discerning when to speak and when to remain silent.

New Testament Teachings

In the New Testament, Jesus Himself was subjected to mockery, particularly during His trial and crucifixion. Matthew 27:29-31 recounts how the soldiers mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and striking Him. Jesus' response was one of silence and endurance, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 53:7, "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth."

The Apostle Paul also faced mockery, especially when preaching the Gospel. In Acts 17:32 , when Paul spoke of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked him. Yet, Paul continued his mission, undeterred by scorn, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his calling.

Guidance for Believers

The epistles provide further instruction for believers on handling mockery. In 1 Peter 3:9 , Peter advises, "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing." This teaching encourages believers to respond to mockery with kindness and blessing, reflecting Christ's love and patience.

James 1:19-20 offers practical advice: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man's anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires." This passage underscores the importance of self-control and the avoidance of hasty reactions.

Reliance on God

Ultimately, the Bible encourages believers to trust in God's justice and timing. Romans 12:19 reminds us, "Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written: 'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.'" This assurance allows believers to release the burden of retaliation and trust in God's sovereign plan.

In summary, the biblical response to mockery involves prayer, wisdom, patience, and a steadfast reliance on God. By following these principles, believers can navigate the challenges of mockery with grace and integrity, reflecting the character of Christ in their lives.
