Introduction

The concept of pursuing righteousness by faith is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizing the belief that righteousness is not achieved through human effort or adherence to the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. This doctrine is rooted in the teachings of the New Testament and is foundational to the understanding of salvation and sanctification in the Christian life.

Biblical Foundation

The Apostle Paul is the primary biblical author who expounds on the doctrine of righteousness by faith. In Romans 1:17 , Paul declares, "For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" This verse underscores the belief that righteousness is a divine gift received through faith, rather than human achievement.

In Romans 3:22 , Paul further explains, "And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction." Here, Paul emphasizes the universality of this righteousness, available to all who place their faith in Christ, regardless of their background or previous adherence to the law.

Old Testament Foreshadowing

The concept of righteousness by faith is not exclusive to the New Testament. The Old Testament provides foreshadowing of this doctrine, particularly in the life of Abraham. Genesis 15:6 states, "Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness." This verse is pivotal in understanding that faith, even before the coming of Christ, was the means by which individuals were deemed righteous before God.

Paul references this in Romans 4:3 , reinforcing that Abraham's faith, not his works, was the basis of his righteousness. This sets a precedent for the New Testament teaching that faith is the key to righteousness.

The Role of the Law

The law, given through Moses, served as a guide to reveal sin and the need for a savior. However, it was never intended as a means to achieve righteousness. In Galatians 3:24 , Paul writes, "So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." The law points to the necessity of faith in Christ for true righteousness.

Faith and Works

While righteousness is attained by faith, the New Testament also teaches that genuine faith will produce good works. James 2:17 states, "So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead." This indicates that while works do not earn righteousness, they are evidence of a living faith.

Paul echoes this sentiment in Ephesians 2:10 , "For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life." Thus, the pursuit of righteousness by faith naturally leads to a life characterized by good works, as an outflow of the transformative power of faith.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of righteousness by faith. His life, death, and resurrection provide the basis for believers to be declared righteous. In Philippians 3:9 , Paul expresses his desire to "be found in Him, not having my own righteousness from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God on the basis of faith."

Christ's obedience and sacrifice fulfill the righteous requirements of the law, allowing believers to receive His righteousness through faith. This imputed righteousness is central to the believer's identity and standing before God.

Conclusion

The pursuit of righteousness by faith is a transformative journey that begins with faith in Jesus Christ and results in a life that reflects His character. It is a foundational doctrine that underscores the grace of God and the believer's dependence on Christ for true righteousness.
