The Passover, known as Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the most significant feasts in the Jewish calendar, commemorating the Israelites' deliverance from slavery in Egypt. The Passover-offerings are central to this observance, as they symbolize the sacrificial lamb whose blood marked the doorposts of the Israelites, sparing them from the final plague—the death of the firstborn.

Biblical Foundation

The institution of the Passover is detailed in the Book of Exodus. God commanded Moses and Aaron to instruct the Israelites to select a lamb without blemish on the tenth day of the first month, Nisan, and to keep it until the fourteenth day. On that evening, the lamb was to be slaughtered, and its blood applied to the doorposts and lintels of their homes. The Lord declared, "The blood on the houses where you are staying will distinguish them; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will fall on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt" (Exodus 12:13).

The Passover Lamb

The lamb, central to the Passover-offerings, was to be a male, one year old, and without defect (Exodus 12:5). This requirement underscored the importance of purity and perfection in offerings made to God. The lamb was to be roasted whole, not boiled or eaten raw, and consumed entirely that night, with any leftovers burned by morning (Exodus 12:8-10).

Symbolism and Significance

The Passover lamb is a profound symbol of redemption and deliverance. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul refers to Christ as "our Passover lamb" who "has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7), drawing a direct parallel between the sacrificial lamb of the Passover and Jesus Christ's atoning death. This typology highlights the continuity of God's redemptive plan from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.

Additional Offerings

In addition to the Passover lamb, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which begins on the day after Passover, involves specific offerings. Leviticus 23:8 instructs, "For seven days you are to present an offering made by fire to the LORD. On the seventh day there shall be a sacred assembly; you must not do any ordinary work" . These offerings included burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, each with prescribed quantities and procedures (Numbers 28:16-25).

Observance and Legacy

The Passover-offerings were to be observed perpetually as a statute for the Israelites and their descendants (Exodus 12:24). This observance served as a lasting reminder of God's deliverance and faithfulness. The Passover meal, or Seder, continues to be a central ritual in Jewish homes, with each element of the meal symbolizing aspects of the Exodus account.

Christian Perspective

For Christians, the Passover-offerings hold additional significance as they prefigure the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The themes of liberation, sacrifice, and divine protection resonate deeply within Christian theology, emphasizing the continuity of God's salvific work through history. The Passover thus serves as a powerful reminder of God's deliverance, both in the historical context of Israel and in the spiritual deliverance offered through Christ.
