Moral Relativism

Definition:
Moral relativism is the philosophical position that asserts that moral or ethical propositions do not reflect absolute and universal truths but are instead relative to the cultural, historical, or personal circumstances of individuals or groups. This viewpoint suggests that what is considered morally right or wrong can vary from one society to another or from one person to another.

Biblical Perspective:
From a biblical standpoint, moral relativism is often contrasted with the belief in absolute moral truths as revealed by God. The Bible presents a framework of moral absolutes that are grounded in the character and nature of God, who is unchanging and eternal. Scripture emphasizes that God's laws and commandments are not subject to human interpretation or cultural shifts.

Key Scriptures:

1. God's Unchanging Nature:
· "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)
· "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)
These verses highlight the constancy of God's character, suggesting that His moral standards are likewise unchanging.

2. Moral Absolutes:
· "You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal." (Exodus 20:13-15)
The Ten Commandments are presented as absolute moral laws given by God, applicable to all people at all times.

3. The Law Written on Hearts:
· "They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them." (Romans 2:15)
This passage suggests that God's moral law is inherently known to humanity, indicating an objective moral standard.

4. Cultural and Moral Deviation:
· "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)
This verse illustrates the chaos and moral confusion that can result from a relativistic approach to ethics, where individuals determine their own standards of right and wrong.

5. The Call to Holiness:
· "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Believers are called to reflect God's holiness, adhering to His moral standards rather than conforming to the shifting values of the world.

Theological Implications:
Moral relativism challenges the biblical assertion of objective moral truths. It raises questions about the authority of Scripture and the nature of sin. If moral standards are relative, the concept of sin becomes subjective, undermining the need for repentance and redemption through Christ. The Bible, however, consistently affirms the existence of absolute moral truths that are grounded in God's eternal nature and revealed through His Word.

Practical Considerations:
Christians are called to uphold biblical moral standards in a world increasingly influenced by relativistic thinking. This involves discerning truth from error, standing firm in faith, and lovingly engaging with those who hold differing views. Believers are encouraged to be "salt and light" (Matthew 5:13-16), influencing the world with the truth of God's Word while demonstrating grace and compassion.
