Definition and Nature God's presence refers to the manifestation of God in the world and His nearness to His creation. It is a central theme in the Bible, illustrating both His immanence and transcendence. God's presence is both comforting and awe-inspiring, providing guidance, protection, and a sense of belonging to His people.
Biblical Instances of God's Presence1.
Creation: From the very beginning, God's presence is evident in the act of creation.
Genesis 1:2 states, "Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." This indicates God's active involvement and presence in the formation of the world.
2.
The Garden of Eden: In
Genesis 3:8, after Adam and Eve sinned, "Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden." This passage highlights the intimate fellowship humanity initially had with God.
3.
The Tabernacle and Temple: God's presence was symbolically represented in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple.
Exodus 25:8-9 instructs, "Then have them make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them. You must make the tabernacle and design all its furnishings according to the pattern I will show you." The Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant was placed, was considered the dwelling place of God's presence.
4.
Theophanies: Throughout the Old Testament, God appeared in various forms, known as theophanies. For example, in
Exodus 3:2, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush: "There the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed."
5.
Jesus Christ: The ultimate manifestation of God's presence is found in Jesus Christ.
John 1:14 declares, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." Jesus is Emmanuel, meaning "God with us" (
Matthew 1:23).
6.
The Holy Spirit: After Jesus' ascension, God's presence continues through the Holy Spirit. In
John 14:16-17, Jesus promises, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you."
Attributes of God's Presence·
Omnipresence: God's presence is not limited by space or time.
