Elihu's Speeches

Topical Encyclopedia
Elihu, a relatively lesser-known figure in the Book of Job, emerges as a significant voice in the narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the suffering of Job. His speeches are found in Job 32-37 and serve as a prelude to the divine discourse that follows. Elihu, the son of Barakel the Buzite, is introduced as a young man who has been listening to the dialogue between Job and his three friends—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. Unlike the three friends, Elihu is not mentioned at the beginning of the book, and his sudden appearance has intrigued scholars and theologians alike.

Background and Context

Elihu's speeches are set against the backdrop of Job's intense suffering and the theological debates that ensue between Job and his friends. The friends argue that Job's suffering must be a result of sin, while Job maintains his innocence and questions the justice of God. Elihu, having listened patiently, becomes angry with both Job and his friends. He is displeased with Job for justifying himself rather than God, and with the friends for failing to provide a satisfactory answer to Job's plight.

Structure and Themes

Elihu's speeches are structured into four main discourses:

1. First Speech (Job 32:6-33:33): Elihu begins by explaining his silence due to his youth, expressing respect for the wisdom of age. However, he asserts that true wisdom comes from the Spirit of God, not merely from age. He criticizes Job for claiming to be righteous before God and introduces the idea that God communicates with humans in various ways, including dreams and suffering, to turn them from wrongdoing.

· "For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices." (Job 33:14)

2. Second Speech (Job 34): Elihu addresses the justice of God, emphasizing that God is incapable of doing wrong. He argues that God repays individuals according to their deeds and that His justice is beyond human comprehension. Elihu rebukes Job for questioning God's justice and suggests that Job's words are those of a rebellious man.

· "Far be it from God to do wickedness, and from the Almighty to act unjustly." (Job 34:10)

3. Third Speech (Job 35): In this discourse, Elihu challenges Job's assertion that righteousness is unprofitable. He argues that human actions, whether righteous or sinful, do not affect God directly but have implications for other people. Elihu suggests that Job's cries for justice are self-centered and lack true understanding of God's transcendence.

· "If you sin, how does it affect Him? If you multiply your transgressions, what does it do to Him?" (Job 35:6)

4. Fourth Speech (Job 36-37): Elihu extols the greatness of God, focusing on His power and majesty as revealed in creation. He emphasizes God's sovereignty and the inscrutability of His ways. Elihu calls Job to consider the wonders of God's works and to recognize His ultimate authority over all creation.

· "Behold, God is exalted in His power. Who is a teacher like Him?" (Job 36:22)

Theological Significance

Elihu's speeches are significant for several reasons. Firstly, they introduce the concept of suffering as a means of divine communication and correction, rather than mere punishment for sin. Elihu suggests that suffering can serve a redemptive purpose, drawing individuals closer to God and away from sin. Secondly, Elihu emphasizes the transcendence and justice of God, challenging human attempts to fully comprehend His ways. His speeches prepare the way for God's own response to Job, highlighting the limitations of human wisdom in the face of divine mystery.

Elihu's role in the Book of Job is unique. He serves as a bridge between the human debates and the divine revelation that follows. His speeches, while not directly addressed by God in the subsequent chapters, provide a theological framework that underscores the themes of divine justice, wisdom, and the purpose of suffering.
