Nehemiah 12:37
At the Fountain Gate they climbed the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
At the Fountain Gate

Near the Pool of Siloam, the Fountain Gate stood by a vital source of water for Jerusalem. Its place in the procession fittingly reflects the cleansing and renewing work God was accomplishing among His restored people. Water also recalls the spiritual life God gives, fulfilled in Christ, who offers living water to all who believe in Him (John 4:10).

they went directly up the steps of the City of David

The procession ascended into Jerusalem’s oldest fortified center, captured and established by David as his royal city (2 Samuel 5:7–9). The route brought the worshipers near the foundations of Israel’s monarchy and God’s covenant promise to David.

on the ascent to the wall

The rebuilt wall represented more than physical defense. It testified that God had preserved His people, restored their worship, and reestablished Jerusalem as the city bearing His name. Their upward movement expressed public thanksgiving for His protection and faithfulness.

and passed above the house of David

The route overlooked the area associated with David’s royal residence and dynasty. God’s promise that David’s throne would endure forever found its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom has no end (2 Samuel 7:16; Luke 1:32–33).

The Water Gate was associated with the public reading of God’s Law during the national renewal described in Nehemiah 8:1–3. The procession concluded near a place where the people had heard, confessed, and obeyed God’s Word, joining restored worship with renewed covenant faithfulness.

The Joy of the Lord, the Strength of his People
LAST Sabbath day in the morning I spoke of the birth of our Saviour as being full of joy to the people of God, and, indeed, to all nations. We then looked at the joy from a distance; we will now in contemplation draw nearer to it, and perhaps as we consider it, and remark the multiplied reasons for its existence, some of those reasons may operate upon our own hearts, and we may go out of this house of prayer ourselves partakers of the exceeding great joy. We shall count it to have been a successful

The Girdle of the City. Nehemiah 3
The beginning of the circumference was from 'the sheep-gate.' That, we suppose, was seated on the south part, yet but little removed from that corner, which looks south-east. Within was the pool of Bethesda, famous for healings. Going forward, on the south part, was the tower Meah: and beyond that, "the tower of Hananeel": in the Chaldee paraphrast it is, 'The tower Piccus,' Zechariah 14:10; Piccus, Jeremiah 31:38.--I should suspect that to be, the Hippic tower, were not that placed on the north

Ezra-Nehemiah
Some of the most complicated problems in Hebrew history as well as in the literary criticism of the Old Testament gather about the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Apart from these books, all that we know of the origin and early history of Judaism is inferential. They are our only historical sources for that period; and if in them we have, as we seem to have, authentic memoirs, fragmentary though they be, written by the two men who, more than any other, gave permanent shape and direction to Judaism, then
