The people spoke falsely, made unreliable covenants, and maintained forms of worship while their hearts remained devoted to sin. Such dishonesty violated the covenant God had made with them. A people called to reflect God’s justice had become unsafe and unfaithful, demonstrating the social ruin produced by spiritual rebellion. Israel’s rejection of God’s ways brought disorder from the palace to the streets, preparing the way for the judgment that would come through Assyria.
