1And the Israelites journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, going from place to place, as the LORD commanded; and camped in Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink there. 2Then the people complained again to Moses, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses replied, “Why quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?” 3And the people thirsted for water there; and murmured against Moses, saying, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children and our cattle with thirst?” 4And Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with these people? They are about ready to stone me.” 5And the LORD said to Moses, “Go out in front of the people, and take the elders of Israel with you; and take your rod in your hand, with which you struck the river, take it, and go. 6I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it for the people to drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called that place “Massah”, and “Meribah” (meaning chiding or strife), because of the striving of the Israelites, and because they tested the LORD, by saying, “Is the LORD with us, or not?” 8Then the Amalekites came, and attacked Israel at Rephidim. 9And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men, and go out and fight with the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” 10So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with the Amalekites: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur (believed to be the husband of Miriam) went up to the top of the hill. 11And when Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed; and when he lowered his hand, the Amalekites prevailed. 12But Moses' arm grew weary and his hands grew heavy; and so they got a stone for him to sit on; and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and one on the other; and his hands were held steady until the setting of the sun. 13And so Joshua vanquished the Amalekites with the sword. 14And the LORD said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in a book (scroll), and repeat it in the hearing of Joshua; for I will utterly blot out any memory of the Amalekites from under heaven.” 15And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it “Jehovah-nissi” (The LORD is my banner); 16For he said, “Because they have raised their fist against the throne of the LORD, the LORD will be at war with the Amalekites from generation to generation.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
