And behold, a certain lawyer rose up, testing Him, saying, “Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”

And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?”

And answering, he said, “‘You will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”

And He said to him, “You answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

But wanting to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

And Jesus, having taken it up, said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers who, having both stripped him and having inflicted wounds, went away, having left him half dead.

Now by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and having seen him, he passed by on the opposite side.

And likewise also a Levite, having come to the place and having seen, passed by on the opposite side.

But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came to him, and having seen, he was moved with compassion;

and having come, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and having put him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him.

And on the next day, having taken out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you might expend, I, in my returning, will repay you.’

Which of these three seems to you to have been a neighbor of the one having fallen among the robbers?”

And he said, “The one having done the mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”
