A PSALM OF ASAPH. O God, nations have come into Your inheritance, || They have defiled Your holy temple, || They made Jerusalem become heaps, O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. A psalm of Asaph. O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
They gave the dead bodies of Your servants || [As] food for the birds of the heavens, || The flesh of Your saints || For the wild beast of the earth. They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth. They have left the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
They have shed their blood || As water around Jerusalem, || And there is none burying. They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead.
We have been a reproach to our neighbors, || A scorn and a derision to our surrounders. We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us. We are objects of contempt to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us.
Until when, O YHWH? Are You angry forever? Your jealousy burns as fire. How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire? How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour Your fury on the nations who have not known You, || And on kingdoms that have not called on Your Name. Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call upon your name! Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;
For [one] has devoured Jacob, || And they have made his habitation desolate. For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation. for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.
Do not remember for us the iniquities of forefathers, || Hurry, let Your mercies go before us, || For we have been very weak. Do not remember against us our former iniquities; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.
Help us, O God of our salvation, || Because of the glory of Your Name, || And deliver us, and cover over our sins, || For Your Name’s sake. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake! Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.
Why do the nations say, “Where [is] their God?” Let [it] be known among the nations before our eyes, || The vengeance of the blood of Your servants that is shed. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes! Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.
Let the groaning of the prisoner come in before You, || According to the greatness of Your arm, || Leave the sons of death. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die! May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
And return to our neighbors, || Sevenfold to their bosom, their reproach, || With which they reproached You, O Lord. Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord! Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
And we, Your people, and the flock of Your pasture, || We give thanks to You for all time, || We recount Your praise from generation to generation! But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise.
