1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David. Do you indeed speak justly, O rulers? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly? To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David. Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men? For the music director; <i>set to</i> Al-tashheth. A Mikhtam of David. Do you indeed speak righteousness, you gods? Do you judge fairly, you sons of mankind? For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam. Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity?
2 No, in your hearts you devise injustice; with your hands you mete out violence on the earth. No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth. Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. No, in heart you practice injustice; On earth you clear a way for the violence of your hands. No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray from birth. The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies. The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. The wicked have turned away from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth. Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like a cobra that shuts its ears, They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear, Their poison <i>is</i> like the poison of a serpent: <i>they are</i> like the deaf adder <i>that</i> stoppeth her ear; They have venom like the venom of a serpent; Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear, Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
5 refusing to hear the tune of the charmer who skillfully weaves his spell. so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter. Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely. So that it does not hear the voice of charmers, <i>Or</i> a skillful caster of spells. that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.
6 O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths; O LORD, tear out the fangs of the lions. O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD! Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD. God, shatter their teeth in their mouth; Break out the fangs of the young lions, LORD. Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; LORD, tear out the fangs of those lions!
7 May they vanish like water that runs off; when they draw the bow, may their arrows be blunted. Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted. Let them melt away as waters <i>which</i> run continually: <i>when</i> he bendeth <i>his bow to shoot</i> his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces. May they flow away like water that runs off; <i>When</i> he aims his arrows, <i>may they be</i> as headless shafts. Let them vanish like water that flows away; when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.
8 Like a slug that dissolves in its slime, like a woman’s stillborn child, may they never see the sun. Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime, like the stillborn child who never sees the sun. As a snail <i>which</i> melteth, let <i>every one of them</i> pass away: <i>like</i> the untimely birth of a woman, <i>that</i> they may not see the sun. <i>May they be</i> like a snail which goes along in slime, <i>Like</i> the miscarriage of a woman that never sees the sun. May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along, like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.
9 Before your pots can feel the burning thorns— whether green or dry— He will sweep them away. Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns, whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away! Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in <i>his</i> wrath. Before your pots can feel <i>the fire of</i> thorns He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike. Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns— whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.
10 The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged; they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked. The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. The righteous will rejoice when he sees vengeance; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Then men will say, “There is surely a reward for the righteous! There is surely a God who judges the earth!” Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.” So that a man shall say, Verily <i>there is</i> a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth. And people will say, “There certainly is a reward for the righteous; There certainly is a God who judges on the earth!” Then people will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”
