1 For the one directing according to “A Dove of Distant Oaks.” Of David. A Miktam in the seizing of him by the Philistines in Gath. Show favor to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; all the day fighting, he oppresses me. Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack.
2 My enemies swallow me up all the day, for many are fighting against me proudly. my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly. My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.
3 On the day I am afraid, I will trust in You. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
4 In God—His word I praise—in God do I trust. I will not fear; what can flesh do to me? In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
5 All the day they wrest my words; their thoughts are all for evil against me. All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil. All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.
6 They gather together, they hide, they mark my steps when they lie in wait for my soul. They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life. They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.
7 Over iniquity bring no escape for them! In your anger, may You cast down the nations, O God! For their crime will they escape? In wrath cast down the peoples, O God! Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.
8 My wanderings You have counted; put my tears in Your bottle—are they not in Your book? You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll — are they not in your record?
9 Then my enemies will turn back on the day I cry out. This I have known, that God is for me. Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me. Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me.
10 In God whose word I do praise, in YHWH whose word I praise— In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise—
11 in God I have put my trust! I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?
12 Your vows, O God, are upon me; I will give thank offerings to You. I must perform my vows to you, O God; I will render thank offerings to you. I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For You have delivered my soul from death, Do You not keep my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living! For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
