For the one directing. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Turn your ear, O God, to my prayer, and do not hide Yourself from my supplication. Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;
Be attentive to me, and answer me; for I am restless in my complaint, and make a noise, Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
from the voice of the enemy, from the face of the oppression of the wicked. For they bring down trouble upon me, and in anger they hate me. because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.
My heart is writhing within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me.
Fear and trembling have come upon me, and shuddering has covered me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.
And I said, “Who shall give to me a wing like a dove, that I might fly away and be at rest— And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.
behold, I would go far off wandering and would lodge in the wilderness. Selah yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah I would flee far away and stay in the desert;
I would hurry to shelter for myself, from the rushing wind, from the tempest.” I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.” I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”
Swallow up, O Lord, divide their tongues! For I have seen violence and strife in the city. Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go around it, on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it. Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.
Disasters are within it, and oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets. ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
For it is not an enemy who scorns me, or I could bear it; and not one hating me who wielded power against me, or I could hide myself from him. For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.
And it was you, a man like me in rank, my companion, and one known by me, But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,
with whom we would take sweet counsel together; in the house of God we walked with the throng. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng. with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.
Devastation is upon them! May they go down alive to Sheol! For evils are in their dwellings, within them. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.
I will call to God, and YHWH will save me. But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Evening and morning and noon I meditate and cry aloud, and He hears my voice. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
In peace He has redeemed my soul from the battle against me, though there were many against me. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God will hear and afflict them—even He who sits of old—Selah with whom there are no changes for Him. And they have not fear God. God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change— he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God.
He has stretched out his hands against those united with him; he has profaned his covenant. My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
His mouth has been smoother than butter, and war is in his heart; his words have been softer than oil, and they are drawn swords. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
Cast your burden upon YHWH, and He will sustain you; He will not give a righteous one to be shaken forever. Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
And You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction, men of blood and deceit! They will not live even half their days. And I will trust in You. But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.
