My son, keep my words, and hide with thee my commandments. My son, honour the Lord, and thou shalt be strong; and fear none but him: | My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; | My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. |
keep my commandments, and thou shalt live; and keep my words as the pupils of thine eyes. | keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; | Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. |
And bind them on thy fingers, and write them on the table of thine heart. | bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. | Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. |
Say that wisdom is thy sister, and gain prudence as an acquaintance for thyself; | Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend, | Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and to insight, “You are my relative.” |
that she may keep thee from the strange and wicked woman, if she should assail thee with flattering words. | to keep you from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words. | They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words. |
For she looks from a window out of her house into the streets, at one whom she may see of the senseless ones, a young man void of understanding, | For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice, | At the window of my house I looked down through the lattice. |
passing by the corner in the passages near her house, | and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense, | I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense. |
and speaking, in the dark of the evening, | passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house | He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house |
when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness: | in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness. | at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in. |
and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter. | And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart. | Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent. |
And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home. | She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home; | (She is unruly and defiant, her feet never stay at home; |
For at one time she wanders without, and at another time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner. | now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait. | now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.) |
Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him, | She seizes him and kisses him, and with bold face she says to him, | She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said: |
I have a peace-offering; today I pay my vows: | “I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my vows; | “Today I fulfilled my vows, and I have food from my fellowship offering at home. |
therefore I came forth to meet thee, desiring thy face; and I have found thee. | so now I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found you. | So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you! |
I have spread my bed with sheets, and I have covered it with double tapestry from Egypt. | I have spread my couch with coverings, colored linens from Egyptian linen; | I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt. |
I have sprinkled my couch with saffron, and my house with cinnamon. | I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. | I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. |
Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love. | Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love. | Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning; let’s enjoy ourselves with love! |
For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey, | For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey; | My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey. |
having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house. | he took a bag of money with him; at full moon he will come home.” | He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full moon.” |
So with much converse she prevailed on him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips forced him from the right path . | With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. | With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. |
And he followed her, being gently led on, and that as an ox is led to the slaughter, and as a dog to bonds, or as a hart shot in the liver with an arrow: | All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast | All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose |
and he hastens as a bird into a snare, not knowing that he is running for his life. | till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life. | till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. |
Now then, my son, hearken to me, and attend to the words of my mouth. | And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth. | Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. |
Let not thine heart turn aside to her ways: | Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths, | Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. |
for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable. | for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng. | Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. |
Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death. | Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death. | Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death. |
