My son! Do not forget my law, || And let your heart keep my commands, My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
For [the] length of [your] days and years, || Life and peace they add to you. for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
Do not let kindness and truth forsake you, || Bind them on your neck, || Write them on the tablet of your heart, Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
And find grace and good understanding || In the eyes of God and man. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust to YHWH with all your heart, || And do not lean to your own understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways know Him, || And He makes your paths straight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes, || Fear YHWH, and turn aside from evil. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
It is healing to your navel, || And moistening to your bones. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor YHWH from your substance, || And from the beginning of all your increase; Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
And your barns are filled [with] plenty, || And your presses break forth [with] new wine. then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Discipline of YHWH, my son, do not despise, || And do not be distressed with His reproof, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
For whom YHWH loves He reproves, || Even as a father the son He is pleased with. for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
O the blessedness of a man [who] has found wisdom, || And of a man [who] brings forth understanding. Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,
For better [is] her merchandise || Than the merchandise of silver, || And than gold—her increase. for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She [is] precious above rubies, || And all your pleasures are not comparable to her. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Length of days [is] in her right hand, || In her left [are] wealth and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, || And all her paths [are] peace. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She [is] a tree of life to those laying hold on her, || And whoever is retaining her [is] blessed. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.
YHWH founded the earth by wisdom, || He prepared the heavens by understanding. The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
By His knowledge depths have been broken, || And clouds drop dew. by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My son! Do not let them turn from your eyes, || Keep wisdom and thoughtfulness, My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;
And they are life to your soul, and grace to your neck. and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you go your way confidently, || And your foot does not stumble. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.
If you lie down, you are not afraid, || Indeed, you have lain down, || And your sleep has been sweet. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden fear, || And of the desolation of the wicked when it comes. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
For YHWH is at your side, || And He has kept your foot from capture. for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. for the LORD will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.
Do not withhold good from its owners, || When your hand [is] toward God to do [it]. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.
Do not say to your friend, || “Go, and return, and tomorrow I give,” || When substance [is] with you. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you|— when you already have it with you.
Do not devise evil against your neighbor, || And he sitting confidently with you. Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you. Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Do not strive with a man without cause, || If he has not done you evil. Do not contend with a man for no reason, when he has done you no harm. Do not accuse anyone for no reason— when they have done you no harm.
Do not be envious of a man of violence, || Nor fix on any of his ways. Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways.
For the perverted [is] an abomination to YHWH, || And His secret counsel [is] with the upright. for the devious person is an abomination to the LORD, but the upright are in his confidence. For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence.
The curse of YHWH [is] in the house of the wicked. And He blesses the habitation of the righteous. The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
If He scorns the scorners, || Yet He gives grace to the humble. Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
The wise inherit glory, || And fools are bearing away shame! The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace. The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.
