5 Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts] And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth And with the first fruits of all your crops (income); Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 Then your barns will be abundantly filled And your vats will overflow with new wine. then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, do not reject or take lightly the discipline of the LORD [learn from your mistakes and the testing that comes from His correction through discipline]; Nor despise His rebuke, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
12 For those whom the LORD loves He corrects, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights. for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
13 Happy [blessed, considered fortunate, to be admired] is the man who finds [skillful and godly] wisdom, And the man who gains understanding and insight [learning from God’s word and life’s experiences], Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,
14 For wisdom’s profit is better than the profit of silver, And her gain is better than fine gold. for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies; And nothing you can wish for compares with her [in value]. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are highways of pleasantness and favor, And all her paths are peace. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy [blessed, considered fortunate, to be admired] is everyone who holds her tightly. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.
19 The LORD by His wisdom has founded the earth; By His understanding He has established the heavens. The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
20 By His knowledge the deeps were broken up And the clouds drip with dew. by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
21 My son, let them not escape from your sight, But keep sound wisdom and discretion, My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;
22 And they will be life to your soul (your inner self) And a gracious adornment to your neck (your outer self). and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
23 Then you will walk on your way [of life] securely And your foot will not stumble. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden fear Nor of the storm of the wicked when it comes [since you will be blameless]; Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26 For the LORD will be your confidence, firm and strong, And will keep your foot from being caught [in a trap]. for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. for the LORD will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.
27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due [its rightful recipients], When it is in your power to do it. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.
28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it,” When you have it with you. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you|— when you already have it with you.
29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor, Who lives securely beside you. Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you. Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
30 Do not quarrel with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm. Do not contend with a man for no reason, when he has done you no harm. Do not accuse anyone for no reason— when they have done you no harm.
31 Do not envy a man of violence And do not choose any of his ways. Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways.
32 For the devious are repulsive to the LORD; But His private counsel is with the upright [those with spiritual integrity and moral courage]. for the devious person is an abomination to the LORD, but the upright are in his confidence. For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence.
33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just and righteous. The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers and scorns the scorners, Yet He gives His grace [His undeserved favor] to the humble [those who give up self-importance]. Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
35 The wise will inherit honor and glory, But dishonor and shame is conferred on fools. The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace. The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.
