1 Do not be envious of men of evil, and do not desire to be with them, Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company;
2 for their heart devises violence and their lips speak trouble. for their hearts devise violence, and their lips talk of trouble. for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.
3 By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established, By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;
4 and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious pleasant wealth. by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
5 A man of wisdom is strong; and a man of knowledge strengthens power; A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might, The wise prevail through great power, and those who have knowledge muster their strength.
6 for by wise counsel you can fashion for yourself the battle, and victory is in a multitude counselors. for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory. Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.
7 Wisdom is high for a fool; in the gate he does not open his mouth. Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the gate he does not open his mouth. Wisdom is too high for fools; in the assembly at the gate they must not open their mouths.
8 One planning to do evil, they will call him an owner of schemes. Whoever plans to do evil will be called a schemer. Whoever plots evil will be known as a schemer.
9 The plotting of foolishness is sin, and an abomination to man is onemocking. The devising of folly is sin, and the scoffer is an abomination to mankind. The schemes of folly are sin, and people detest a mocker.
10 If you slacken in the day of distress, then narrow is your strength. If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength!
11 Deliver those being led away to death, and those stumbling to the slaughter, if only you would hold back. Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
12 If you say, “Behold we did not know this,” does not the One weighing hearts Himself know it, and the One watching over your soul Himself know it? And He has rendered to each man according to his work. If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work? If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?
13 Eat honey, my son, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet upon your palate. My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14 Know that wisdom is thus to your soul; if you have found it, then there is a posterity, and your hope will not be cut off. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off. Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
15 Do not lie in wait like a wicked one against the abode of the righteous; do not spoil his resting place; Lie not in wait as a wicked man against the dwelling of the righteous; do no violence to his home; Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place;
16 for seven times the righteous may fall and rise up, and the wicked shall stumble into evil. for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity. for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
17 At the falling of your enemy, you should not be glad, and in his stumbling do not let your heart rejoice, Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
18 lest YHWH should see and it be evil in His eyes, and He turns away His anger from him. lest the LORD see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him. or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.
19 You must not fret at the evildoers, and do not be envious of the wicked, Fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked, Do not fret because of evildoers or be envious of the wicked,
20 for there is no posterity for an evil one, and the lamp of the wicked ones will be extinguished. for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out. for the evildoer has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21 Fear YHWH, my son, and the king; do not pledge yourself with ones who change, My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not join with those who do otherwise, Fear the LORD and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials,
22 for suddenly their downfall will arise, and the ruin of them both—who knows? for disaster will arise suddenly from them, and who knows the ruin that will come from them both? for those two will send sudden destruction on them, and who knows what calamities they can bring?
23 These also are of the wise ones: The recognizing of faces in giving judgment is not good. These also are sayings of the wise. Partiality in judging is not good. These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good:
24 One saying to a wicked one, “You are righteous”—peoples will curse him; nations will denounce him; Whoever says to the wicked, “You are in the right,” will be cursed by peoples, abhorred by nations, Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,” will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.
25 and to those reproving it will be pleasant, and upon them will come a blessing of goodness. but those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, and a good blessing will come upon them. But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come on them.
26 The lips he kisses—the one returning straightforward words. Whoever gives an honest answer kisses the lips. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.
27 Prepare your work in the outdoors, and make it ready in the field for yourself; and afterward you may build your house. Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house. Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.
28 You must not be a witness without cause against your neighbor or deceive with your lips. Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause, and do not deceive with your lips. Do not testify against your neighbor without cause— would you use your lips to mislead?
29 Do not say, “According to what he has done to me, so I will do to him; I will return to the man according to his deed.” Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.” Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did.”
30 Near the field of a lazy man I passed by, and near the vineyard of a man lacking heart. I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;
31 And behold, thorns had come up all over it; its face was covered with nettles, and the wall of its stones was torn down. and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.
32 And I saw—I—I set my heart; I have seen, I have received instruction. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little a folding of the hands to rest, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—
34 and your poverty has come as one traveling, and your needs like a man of shield. and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
