1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD; But a perfect weight is His delight. A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight. The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.
2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame; But with the lowly is wisdom. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them; But the perverseness of the faithless shall destroy them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath; But righteousness delivereth from death. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
5 The righteousness of the sincere shall make straight his way; But the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them; But the faithless shall be trapped in their own crafty device. The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust. The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish, And the hope of strength perisheth. When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too. Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, And the wicked cometh in his stead. The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead. The righteous person is rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead.
9 With his mouth the impious man destroyeth his neighbour; But through knowledge shall the righteous be delivered. With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered. With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape.
10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth; And when the wicked perish, there is joy. When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted; But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown. Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
12 He that despiseth his neighbour lacketh understanding; But a man of discernment holdeth his peace. Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.
13 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; But he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth a matter. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.
14 Where no wise direction is, a people falleth; But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it; But he that hateth them that strike hands is secure. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm, but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.
16 A gracious woman obtaineth honour; And strong men obtain riches. A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches. A kindhearted woman gains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth.
17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul; But he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh. A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.
18 The wicked earneth deceitful wages; But he that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward. The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
19 Stedfast righteousness tendeth to life; But he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die. Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death.
20 They that are perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD; But such as are upright in their way are His delight. Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are his delight. The LORD detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
21 My hand upon it! the evil man shall not be unpunished; But the seed of the righteous shall escape. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered. Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.
22 As a ring of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman that turneth aside from discretion. Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion. Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous is only good; But the expectation of the wicked is wrath. The desire of the righteous ends only in good, the expectation of the wicked in wrath. The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.
24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; And there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth only to want. One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
25 The beneficent soul shall be made rich, and he that satisfieth abundantly shall be satisfied also himself. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him; But blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it. People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God’s blessing on the one who is willing to sell.
27 He that diligently seeketh good seeketh favour; But he that searcheth for evil, it shall come unto him. Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it. Whoever seeks good finds favor, but evil comes to one who searches for it.
28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; But the righteous shall flourish as foliage. Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind; And the foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart. Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart. Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he that is wise winneth souls. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.
31 Behold, the righteous shall be requited in the earth; How much more the wicked and the sinner! If the righteous is repaid on earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner! If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!
