1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the grief of his mother. The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother. The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; But righteousness delivereth from death. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.
3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; But He thrusteth away the desire of the wicked. The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; But the hand of the diligent maketh rich. A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
5 A wise son gathereth in summer; But a son that doeth shamefully sleepeth in harvest. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame. He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
6 Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence. Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
7 The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; But the name of the wicked shall rot. The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. The name of the righteous is used in blessings, but the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments; But a prating fool shall fall. The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
9 He that walketh uprightly walketh securely; But he that perverteth his ways shall be found out. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; And a prating fool shall fall. Whoever winks the eye causes trouble, and a babbling fool will come to ruin. Whoever winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes; But love covereth all transgressions. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.
13 In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense. Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge; But the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin. The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near. The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city; The ruin of the poor is their poverty. A rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the poverty of the poor is their ruin. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
16 The wages of the righteous is life; The increase of the wicked is sin. The wage of the righteous leads to life, the gain of the wicked to sin. The wages of the righteous is life, but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.
17 He is in the way of life that heedeth instruction; But he that forsaketh reproof erreth. Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
18 He that hideth hatred is of lying lips; And he that uttereth a slander is a fool. The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool.
19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; But he that refraineth his lips is wise. When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.
20 The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; The heart of the wicked is little worth. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many; But the foolish die for want of understanding. The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.
22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, And toil addeth nothing thereto. The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do wickedness, And so is wisdom to a man of discernment. Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding. A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him; And the desire of the righteous shall be granted. What the wicked dreads will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted. What the wicked dread will overtake them; what the righteous desire will be granted.
25 When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; But the righteous is an everlasting foundation. When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever. When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, So is the sluggard to them that send him. Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him. As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so are sluggards to those who send them.
27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days; But the years of the wicked shall be shortened. The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short. The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
28 The hope of the righteous is gladness; But the expectation of the wicked shall perish. The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish. The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
29 The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, But ruin to the workers of iniquity. The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the blameless, but destruction to evildoers. The way of the LORD is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
30 The righteous shall never be moved; But the wicked shall not inhabit the land. The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not dwell in the land. The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous buddeth with wisdom; But the froward tongue shall be cut off. The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; But the mouth of the wicked is all frowardness. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse. The lips of the righteous know what finds favor, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
