WOE to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and iniquity; the plunder in it cannot be estimated. Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder— no end to the prey! Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!
The noise of the whip and the noise of rattling of the wheels and of the snorting of horses and of bounding chariots! The crack of the whip, and rumble of the wheel, galloping horse and bounding chariot! The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots!
The horseman driving, with the flash of the sword and the glittering spear! And there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of corpses; there is no end to corpses; they stumble over their corpses. Horsemen charging, flashing sword and glittering spear, hosts of slain, heaps of corpses, dead bodies without end— they stumble over the bodies! Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses—
Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the harlot that was beautiful and mistress of witchcrafts, who brings up nations through her whoredoms and tribes through her witchcraft, And all for the countless whorings of the prostitute, graceful and of deadly charms, who betrays nations with her whorings, and peoples with her charms. all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft.
Behold, I am against you, says the LORD of hosts; and I will raise your skirts over your face and will show the nations your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame. Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face; and I will make nations look at your nakedness and kingdoms at your shame. “I am against you,” declares the LORD Almighty. “I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the nations your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame.
And I will cast filth upon you and disgrace you, and will make you a spectacle, I will throw filth at you and treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle. I will pelt you with filth, I will treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle.
And it shall come to pass that all who look upon you shall abhor you and say, Nineveh is plundered; who will bemoan her? Whence shall I seek a comforter for you? And all who look at you will shrink from you and say, “Wasted is Nineveh; who will grieve for her?” Where shall I seek comforters for you? All who see you will flee from you and say, ‘Nineveh is in ruins—who will mourn for her?’ Where can I find anyone to comfort you?”
Are you better than Jawan of Ammon, which is situated by the rivers, that had waters round about her, whose rampart was the sea, and water her wall? Are you better than Thebes that sat by the Nile, with water around her, her rampart a sea, and water her wall? Are you better than Thebes, situated on the Nile, with water around her? The river was her defense, the waters her wall.
Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was limitless; Put and the Libyans were her helpers; Cush was her strength; Egypt too, and that without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers. Cush and Egypt were her boundless strength; Put and Libya were among her allies.
Yet even she was carried away into captivity; her children were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets; and they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity; her infants were dashed in pieces at the head of every street; for her honored men lots were cast, and all her great men were bound in chains. Yet she was taken captive and went into exile. Her infants were dashed to pieces at every street corner. Lots were cast for her nobles, and all her great men were put in chains.
You also shall be grieved and you shall be despised; you also shall seek help because of your enemies. You also will be drunken; you will go into hiding; you will seek a refuge from the enemy. You too will become drunk; you will go into hiding and seek refuge from the enemy.
All your strongholds shall be like fig trees with the first ripe figs; when they are ripe, they fall into the mouth of the eater. All your fortresses are like fig trees with first-ripe figs— if shaken they fall into the mouth of the eater. All your fortresses are like fig trees with their first ripe fruit; when they are shaken, the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.
Behold, your people in the midst of you are cowards; they will open the gates of your land to your enemies; the fire shall devour your bars. Behold, your troops are women in your midst. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has devoured your bars. Look at your troops— they are all weaklings. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed the bars of your gates.
Draw water for the siege, fortify your strongholds; mix the clay, tread the mortar, strengthen the foundations. Draw water for the siege; strengthen your forts; go into the clay; tread the mortar; take hold of the brick mold! Draw water for the siege, strengthen your defenses! Work the clay, tread the mortar, repair the brickwork!
There shall the fire devour you, the sword shall cut you off; it shall devour you like the crawling locust because you have become many like the crawling locust and multiplied like the locust. There will the fire devour you; the sword will cut you off. It will devour you like the locust. Multiply yourselves like the locust; multiply like the grasshopper! There the fire will consume you; the sword will cut you down— they will devour you like a swarm of locusts. Multiply like grasshoppers, multiply like locusts!
You have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of the heaven; the young locust swarms and flies away. You increased your merchants more than the stars of the heavens. The locust spreads its wings and flies away. You have increased the number of your merchants till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky, but like locusts they strip the land and then fly away.
Your Nazarites are as the locusts, and your warriors as the swarms of locusts which settle on the hedges on a cold day, but when the sun arises they fly off, and it is not known where they are. Your princes are like grasshoppers, your scribes like clouds of locusts settling on the fences in a day of cold— when the sun rises, they fly away; no one knows where they are. Your guards are like locusts, your officials like swarms of locusts that settle in the walls on a cold day— but when the sun appears they fly away, and no one knows where.
Your friends slumber, O king of Assyria; your allies have deserted; your people are scattered on the mountains, and they have none to gather them. Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria; your nobles slumber. Your people are scattered on the mountains with none to gather them. King of Assyria, your shepherds slumber; your nobles lie down to rest. Your people are scattered on the mountains with no one to gather them.
There is no one to grieve over your wound; your wound is painful; all who hear the news of you clap their hands over you; for your wickedness has gone forth against every man continually. There is no easing your hurt; your wound is grievous. All who hear the news about you clap their hands over you. For upon whom has not come your unceasing evil? Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?
