Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and rapine; the prey departeth not. Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder— no end to the prey! Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!
The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels; and pransing horses, and jumping chariots; The crack of the whip, and rumble of the wheel, galloping horse and bounding chariot! The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots!
the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear; and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of carcases: and there is none end of the corpses; they stumble upon their corpses: Horsemen charging, flashing sword and glittering spear, hosts of slain, heaps of corpses, dead bodies without end— they stumble over the bodies! Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses—
because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well favoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. And all for the countless whorings of the prostitute, graceful and of deadly charms, who betrays nations with her whorings, and peoples with her charms. all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft.
Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face; and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face; and I will make nations look at your nakedness and kingdoms at your shame. “I am against you,” declares the LORD Almighty. “I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the nations your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame.
And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock. I will throw filth at you and treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle. I will pelt you with filth, I will treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle.
And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee? And all who look at you will shrink from you and say, “Wasted is Nineveh; who will grieve for her?” Where shall I seek comforters for you? All who see you will flee from you and say, ‘Nineveh is in ruins—who will mourn for her?’ Where can I find anyone to comfort you?”
Art thou better than No-amon, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about her; whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was of the sea? Are you better than Thebes that sat by the Nile, with water around her, her rampart a sea, and water her wall? Are you better than Thebes, situated on the Nile, with water around her? The river was her defense, the waters her wall.
Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers. Cush was her strength; Egypt too, and that without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers. Cush and Egypt were her boundless strength; Put and Libya were among her allies.
Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity; her infants were dashed in pieces at the head of every street; for her honored men lots were cast, and all her great men were bound in chains. Yet she was taken captive and went into exile. Her infants were dashed to pieces at every street corner. Lots were cast for her nobles, and all her great men were put in chains.
Thou also shalt be drunken, thou shalt be hid; thou also shalt seek a strong hold because of the enemy. You also will be drunken; you will go into hiding; you will seek a refuge from the enemy. You too will become drunk; you will go into hiding and seek refuge from the enemy.
All thy fortresses shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. All your fortresses are like fig trees with first-ripe figs— if shaken they fall into the mouth of the eater. All your fortresses are like fig trees with their first ripe fruit; when they are shaken, the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.
Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women; the gates of thy land are set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire hath devoured thy bars. Behold, your troops are women in your midst. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has devoured your bars. Look at your troops— they are all weaklings. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed the bars of your gates.
Draw thee water for the siege, strengthen thy fortresses: go into the clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brickkiln. Draw water for the siege; strengthen your forts; go into the clay; tread the mortar; take hold of the brick mold! Draw water for the siege, strengthen your defenses! Work the clay, tread the mortar, repair the brickwork!
There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall devour thee like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locust. There will the fire devour you; the sword will cut you off. It will devour you like the locust. Multiply yourselves like the locust; multiply like the grasshopper! There the fire will consume you; the sword will cut you down— they will devour you like a swarm of locusts. Multiply like grasshoppers, multiply like locusts!
Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away. You increased your merchants more than the stars of the heavens. The locust spreads its wings and flies away. You have increased the number of your merchants till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky, but like locusts they strip the land and then fly away.
Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. Your princes are like grasshoppers, your scribes like clouds of locusts settling on the fences in a day of cold— when the sun rises, they fly away; no one knows where they are. Your guards are like locusts, your officials like swarms of locusts that settle in the walls on a cold day— but when the sun appears they fly away, and no one knows where.
Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy worthies are at rest: thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them. Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria; your nobles slumber. Your people are scattered on the mountains with none to gather them. King of Assyria, your shepherds slumber; your nobles lie down to rest. Your people are scattered on the mountains with no one to gather them.
There is no assuaging of thy hurt; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee clap the hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually? There is no easing your hurt; your wound is grievous. All who hear the news about you clap their hands over you. For upon whom has not come your unceasing evil? Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?
