1 THEN Jesus was carried away by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the adversary. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 So he fasted forty days and forty nights; but at last he was hungry. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 And the tempter drew near and said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, that it is not by bread alone that man can live, but by every word which comes from the mouth of God. But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the adversary took him to the holy city, and he made him to stand up on the pinnacle of the temple. Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
6 And he said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, that he will command his angels concerning you, and they will bear you up on their hands, so that even your foot may not strike a stone. and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, Again it is written, that you shall not try out the Lord your God. Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again the adversary took him to a very high mountain, and he showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 10 Then Jesus said to him, Go away, Satan, for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the adversary left him alone; and behold the angels drew near and ministered unto him. Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
12 Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he departed to Galilee. Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 And he left Nazareth, and came and settled in Capernaum, by the seaside, within the borders of Zabulon and of Napthali. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—
14 So that it might be fulfilled, which was said by the prophet Isaiah, who said, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 O land of Zabulon, O land of Napthali, the way to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles! “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 The people who dwelt in darkness saw a great light, and those who settled in the country and in the midst of the shadows of death, light shone on them. the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is coming near. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
18 And while he was walking by the shore of the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter and his brother Andrew, who were casting nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 21 And when he left that place he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John, in a ship with Zebedee their father, repairing their nets; and Jesus called them. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.
25 So large crowds followed him from Galilee, and from the ten cities, and from Jerusalem and from Judaea, and from across the Jordan. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
