1 THEN Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 And the tempter coming said to him: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Who answered and said: It is written, Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple, Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
6 And said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written: That he hath given his angels charge over thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone. and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him: It is written again: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again the devil took him up into a very high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9 And said to him: All these will I give thee, if falling down thou wilt adore me. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus saith to him: Begone, Satan: for it is written, The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and him only shalt thou serve. Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him; and behold angels came and ministered to him. Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
12 And when Jesus had heard that John was delivered up, he retired into Galilee: Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 And leaving the city Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capharnaum on the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim; And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—
14 That it might be fulfilled which was said by Isaias the prophet: so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 Land of Zabulon and land of Nephthalim, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 The people that sat in darkness, hath seen great light: and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death, light is sprung up. the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
18 And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishers). While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he saith to them: Come ye after me, and I will make you to be fishers of men. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
20 And they immediately leaving their nets, followed him. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets: and he called them. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,
22 And they forthwith left their nets and father, and followed him. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom: and healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity, among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria, and they presented to him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and such as were possessed by devils, and lunatics, and those that had palsy, and he cured them: So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.
25 And much people followed him from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
