Remember, O Jehovah, what was to us: look and see our reproach. Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace! Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.
Our inheritance was turned to strangers, our houses to foreigners. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
We were orphans, no father; our mothers as widows. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows.
We drank our water for silver; our wood will come for a price. We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought. We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price.
Upon our necks were we pursued: we labored and no rest to us. Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest. Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest.
We gave the hand to Egypt, to Assur, to be filled with bread. We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough. We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
Our fathers sinned, they are not; we bore their iniquities. Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities. Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.
Servants ruled over us: none delivering from their hand. Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand. Slaves rule over us, and there is no one to free us from their hands.
With our souls we shall bring our bread from the face of the sword of the desert. We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert.
Our skin was scorched as a furnace from the face of the violent heat of famine. Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine. Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger.
They humbled the women in Zion the virgins in the cities of Judah. Women are raped in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah. Women have been violated in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah.
Chiefs were hung by their hand: the faces of old men were not honored. Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect.
They took away the chosen ones to grind, and the young men were weak in the wood. Young men are compelled to grind at the mill, and boys stagger under loads of wood. Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood.
Old men ceased from the gate, the chosen ones from their stringed instruments. The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music. The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.
The joy of our heart ceased; our dance was turned to mourning. The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning. Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.
The crown of our head fell: wo! now to us, for we sinned. The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!
For this our heart was languid; for this our eyes were darkened. For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim, Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim
For mount Zion was laid waste, the foxes went upon it. for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it. for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it.
Thou, O Jehovah, shalt dwell forever; thy throne to generation and generation. But you, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations. You, LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.
Wherefore wilt thou forget us forever? wilt thou forsake us to length of days? Why do you forget us forever, why do you forsake us for so many days? Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long?
Turn us back, O Jehovah, to thee, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old— Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old
But rejecting, thou didst reject us; thou wert angry against us even greatly. unless you have utterly rejected us, and you remain exceedingly angry with us. unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
