REMEMBER, O LORD, what has come upon us; behold, and see our reproach. Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace! Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to aliens. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows.
We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold to us. We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought. We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price.
Our necks are under yokes; we labor, and have no rest. Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest. Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest.
The Egyptians gave a helping hand, and we looked to the Assyrians to provide bread. We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough. We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
Our fathers have sinned, and are no more; and we have borne their iniquities. Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities. Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.
Servants rule over us; there is none to deliver us out of their hands. Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand. Slaves rule over us, and there is no one to free us from their hands.
We get our bread with the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert.
Our skin has shriveled as though burned in an oven because of the suffering of famine. Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine. Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger.
Women are ravished in Zion, and virgins in the cities of Judah. Women are raped in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah. Women have been violated in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah.
Princes are hanged up by their hands; the faces of the elders are not honored. Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect.
The young men grind the mill, and the youths stumble under loads of wood. Young men are compelled to grind at the mill, and boys stagger under loads of wood. Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood.
The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their joy. The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music. The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.
The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning. Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!
For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim. For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim, Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim
Because mount Zion is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it. for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it.
But thou, O LORD, dost endure for ever; thy throne from generation to generation. But you, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations. You, LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.
Therefore do not forget us for ever, nor forsake us for so long a time. Why do you forget us forever, why do you forsake us for so many days? Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long?
Bring us back to thee, O LORD, and we shall be restored; renew our days as of old. Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old— Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old
For thou hast utterly rejected us; thou hast been exceedingly angry against us. unless you have utterly rejected us, and you remain exceedingly angry with us. unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
