1 After Abimelech's death, Tola son of Puah, grandson of Dodo, from the tribe of Issachar, rose up to deliver Israel. He lived in Shamir in the Ephraimite hill country. After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. 7 The LORD was furious with Israel and turned them over to the Philistines and Ammonites. 10 The Israelites cried out for help to the LORD: |We have sinned against you. We abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals.| And the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”
11 The LORD said to the Israelites, |Did I not deliver you from Egypt, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, And the LORD said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? The LORD replied, “When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
12 the Sidonians, Amalek, and Midian when they oppressed you? You cried out for help to me, and I delivered you from their power. The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, and I saved you out of their hand. the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
13 But since you abandoned me and worshiped other gods, I will not deliver you again. Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more. But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
14 Go and cry for help to the gods you have chosen! Let them deliver you from trouble!| Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”
15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, |We have sinned. You do to us as you see fit, but deliver us today!| And the people of Israel said to the LORD, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. Only please deliver us this day.” But the Israelites said to the LORD, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.”
16 They threw away the foreign gods they owned and worshiped the LORD. Finally the LORD grew tired of seeing Israel suffer so much. So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and he became impatient over the misery of Israel. Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.
17 The Ammonites assembled and camped in Gilead; the Israelites gathered together and camped in Mizpah. Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
18 The leaders of Gilead said to one another, |Who is willing to lead the charge against the Ammonites? He will become the leader of all who live in Gilead!| And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”
