1 And there arose after Abimelech to save Israel Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar. And he dwelt in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. After the time of Abimelek, a man of Issachar named Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
2 And He judged Israel twenty-three years, and he died, and he was buried in Shamir. And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir. He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
3 And arose after him Jair the Gileadite, and he judged Israel twenty-two years. After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.
4 And there were unto him thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and thirty towns unto him, which are called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.

6 And the sons of Israel added to do evil in the eyes of YHWH, and they served the Baals, and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and they forsook YHWH and did not serve Him. The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him. Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,
7 And the anger of YHWH was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon. So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
8 And they harassed and oppressed the sons of Israel—from that year, eighteen years, all the sons of Israel who were on the other side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, that is, in Gilead. and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.
9 And the sons of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim. And Israel was greatly distressed. And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.
10 And the sons of Israel cried out to YHWH, saying, “We have sinned against You, because we have both forsaken our God and served the Baals.” And the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”
11 And YHWH said to the sons of Israel, “Did not I save you from Egypt, and from the Amorite, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines? And the LORD said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? The LORD replied, “When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
12 And the Sidonians and Amalekite and Maonites oppressed you⁺, and you⁺ cried out to Me, and I delivered you⁺ from their hands. The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, and I saved you out of their hand. the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
13 And you⁺ have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will not add to deliver you⁺. Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more. But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
14 Go and cry out to the gods that you⁺ have chosen; let them deliver you⁺ in the time of your⁺ distress.” Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”
15 And the sons of Israel said to YHWH, “We have sinned. You do to us according to all that is good in Your eyes. Only deliver us, please, this day.” And the people of Israel said to the LORD, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. Only please deliver us this day.” But the Israelites said to the LORD, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.”
16 And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and they served YHWH, and His soul was shortened in the misery of Israel. So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and he became impatient over the misery of Israel. Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.
17 And the sons of Ammon gathered together and encamped in Gilead, and the sons of Israel assembled and encamped in Mizpah. Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
18 And the people—the leaders of Gilead—said one to another, “Who is the man who will begin the fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall be head over all those dwelling in Gilead.” And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”
