1 And these are the sons of Israel who inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel, distributed as an inheritance to them. These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them.
2 Their inheritance was by lot, as YHWH had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. Their inheritance was by lot, just as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
3 For Moses had given the inheritance to two of the tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; and to the Levites he had given not an inheritance in their midst. For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,
4 For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their property. For the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
5 As YHWH had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did, and they divided the land. The people of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses; they allotted the land. So the Israelites divided the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
6 And the sons of Judah came near to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word that YHWH said to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh-barnea. Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.
7 I was a son of forty years when Moses the servant of YHWH sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back to him word as with my heart. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,
8 And my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, and I wholly followed after YHWH my God. But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the LORD my God. but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.
9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Nevertheless, the land where your foot has trodden in it shall be to you for an inheritance, and to your sons, even to forever, because you have wholly followed YHWH my God.’ And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’ So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’
10 And, behold, YHWH has kept me alive as He said these forty and five years, from when YHWH spoke this word to Moses when Israel wandered in the wilderness; and, behold, I am this day a son of five and eighty years. And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. “Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!
11 Yet I am this day as strong as on the day that Moses sent me. As my power was then, so is my power now, for war, and to go out and come in. I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.
12 And now, give to me this mountain, of which YHWH spoke in that day, for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and the cities were great and fortified. Perhaps YHWH will be with me, and I will dispossess them as YHWH has spoken.” So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said.” Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
13 And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.
14 Upon thus Hebron was to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite the inheritance to this day, because that he wholly followed YHWH, God of Israel. Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel. So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.
15 (And the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba; he was the great man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war. Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba. (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war. (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.
