1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it because their evil has come up before me.” “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the LORD’s presence. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the LORD’s presence. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4 But the LORD threw a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart. But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god. They threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god. Maybe this god will consider us, and we won’t perish.” So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 “Come on! ” the sailors said to each other. “Let’s cast lots. Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.” So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah. And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from? ” Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.” And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men were seized by a great fear and said to him, “What have you done? ” The men knew he was fleeing from the LORD’s presence because he had told them. Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us? ” For the sea was getting worse and worse. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 He answered them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this great storm that is against you.” He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more. Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14 So they called out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, don’t let us perish because of this man’s life, and don’t charge us with innocent blood! For you, LORD, have done just as you pleased.” Therefore they called out to the LORD, “O LORD, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.” Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”
15 Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16 The men were seized by great fear of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
17 The LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.
